Looking for a great dentist? I found him! Dr. Yung, his wife and whole staff are top self! They always make me feel comfortable when I come in and that's not easy... seeing dentist visit can be scary at times. Mrs Yung answer my phone call while on Vacation to help me with a horrid toothache. Called in a perscription and made me an appointment to see them 1st thing when they returned THAT NIGHT! I broke off a piece of my tooth and then it had a hole in it. I am not from the area and I don't have dental insurance. I wanted to get the tooth fixed asap so it wouldn't get worse. I called Dr. Richard Yung's office and they fit me right in the same day! The staff were very friendly and welcoming. My tooth is filled and it feels normal! I had my very first appointment with Dr Yung today and I was AMAZED. I'm generally terrified of the dentist due to some really bad experiences with some of the more "commercial" dentist offices. I walked in this morning very anxiously. However, I was immediately reassured as I walked into the office. Janice at the front desk was so sweet and made me feel very comfortable. I was seen minutes after arriving by Dr Yung. I told him my concerns and he made me feel very safe and listened to (which was the opposite of any other dentist trip ever). He explained was he was going to do throughly, continued to make sure I was comfortable and did a great job cleaning my teeth. I wish I would've taken before pictures for comparison. One of my biggest regrets of having to leave South Carolina was that I would no longer be able to go to Dr. Yung. I come from a family background where little to no emphasis is placed on teeth hygiene. I'm not proud of it, but you can't turn back time... But you can go to an honest, caring, friendly dentist. I, unfortunately, had to get a root canal done despite being fresh out of college (not your usual demography for a root canal). They could tell I was super apprehensive. Let's face it, I'm scared of going to dentists. That high pitched drill-like sound scares me! The last time I had gone to a dentist, I had 4 teeth pulled out at once and felt like a vampire for the rest of the day (that was cool though). At the age of 22, I humbly admitted that I was very comforted when one of the nurses (not sure if that's the right term to refer to them) squeezed my arm and reassured me that I was brave and that I would get through it. She was there during the entire procedure. Her focus was 100% on assisting Dr. Yung and routinely she would ask me if I was doing okay, if I felt any discomfort, or if I needed anything. She was like a big sister; she really looked out for me (I wish I remembered her name!). Dr. Yung himself is impeccable. He's never pushed me into having my wisdom tooth pulled (random fact: I was only born with one, now I have none). He's made gentle reminders and suggestions about how to take better care of my teeth/gums, but that has been it. He always told me that if there was nothing wrong with the wisdom tooth, there wasn't a huge need to pull it out. A wise thought I wish I had remembered when I visited a dentist up in Maryland. Holy crap, I felt ripped off. Not only did the dentist in MD pretty much make me feel obligated to have the wisdom tooth pulled, during the procedure, he knock the crown off my other tooth AND he was also talking the entire time to the receptionist! There were times he wasn't even looking into my mouth when the drill was inside! No thanks to the above mentioned dentist, but to this day I am still scared of dentists -- that is every dentist but Dr. Yung. I've even considered taking off work just to fly down to Dr. Yung, but of course, that's not very feasible... Highly tempting though! Anyway, if you're new to the area or even looking to switch dentists, I highly, highly, with my life on the line: recommend Dr. Yung! read more

Before I talk about how amazing and kind and patient Dr. Yung, his wife Shirley, Janice at the front desk and everyone else in that office are...I'd like to just preface this by saying: 1) I'm from/live in LA, so maybe my expectations of doctors/doctor offices are not the same as what people may expect in Columbia, SC...basically, maybe "patient and sweet" people are not so unusual here as it may be in bigger cities... 2) I was not the patient with Dr. Yung but was bringing my fiance's mom here for dental services 3) I'm not in charge of my fiance's mom's medical needs and my fiance and I also had no idea that she had skipped any and all dentist appts for over 3 years now...which is what led to this "emergency dental visit." Back to the review: I called Dr. Yung's office one morning when I first found out my fiance's mom was having severe tooth pain, but only did they make an appointment for us the next day...they called me back to say they found time to squeeze us in that same day in a few hours...note, this was our first time visit and 95% of the time, no doctors/dentist's will take a brand new patient right away as those new patient appts generally take much more time and there usually isn't an extra 30-45 min free appt on last second notice...so I was already very impressed and grateful for Janice and the office to go out of their way to accommodate us. Upon arrival, the office is very cute and charming and clean (I'm very particular about this...esp in medical offices). Shirley, Dr. Yung's wife, and the rest of the staff were very warm and welcoming. They even offered us a list of medical symptoms translated from English to Chinese on a chart so that native Chinese speakers could accurately fill out the new patient medical history form. Dr. Yung helped instantly relieve the severe pain my fiance's mom was feeling and he cleaned out her terribly rotten tooth so that she could be temporarily more comfortable until her actual root canal appt. Shirley helped me book the root canal appointment with the Endodontist they referred us to and we were able to get an appointment on the next business day! Everything went well with the root canal and I brought my fiance's mom back to Dr. Yung's office to finish with a "Pulp and Core" procedure (to fill up the rest of that root canal space, the last step before getting a crown made and fixed to secure it all in place) a few days after the root canal appt. However at this second visit to Dr. Yung, completely out of my control, my fiance's mom decides out of the blue to again NOT get her teeth cleaned nor did she want to get the panoramic x-rays you're meant to get every year and esp in this case, to ensure the root canal was 100% successful in removing any and all bacteria etc from the decaying tooth. Dr. Yung and Shirley handled this "difficult" situation with such grace and professionalism but most of all, they were very understanding and empathetic, not something you would expect from every doctor/dentist you see, regardless of whether the doctor/dentist went to a top tier college or not... I'm very grateful to Dr. Yung and everyone there, that at least we were able to get the root canal taken care of for my fiance's mom (even though she seems to be content on going into year 4 of no dental cleaning at all) If I had not just had my dental cleaning a couple months ago with my usual dentist back in LA, I'd have really been tempted to make an appointment to see Dr. Yung myself, that's how comfortable I felt with them and with regards to his professional dental knowledge as well. I had read other reviews highlighting how honest Dr. Yung is and I must agree as well. And that's very refreshing and much appreciated esp in this day and age where you hear about doctors who recommend you to do X, Y and Z things when you really didn't need all if any of those recommended procedures! Dr Yung's office was very pleasant and efficient. While traveling, my upper bridge fell out. They took me in right away. Dr Yung was extremely thorough. He put the bridge back in. I highly recommend Dr. Yung. He practices conservative dentistry at an affordable price. I went to Dr. Yung for another opinion after two other dental practices in the Columbia area had insisted that I needed to get crowns as soon as possible or risk losing teeth. It seems to me that some of the large dental offices are run by corporations that employ the dentists and require them to sell their patients on as much dental work as they can. Dr. Yung has owned and operated his own practice for many years and is not like that at all. After taking x-rays and examining my teeth, he told me that I had two small chips in my teeth that did not necessarily need to be repaired at this time. I mentioned that another tooth was slightly sensitive, and he said that I could either leave it as is for now, or see an endodontist for a root canal and a crown if the tooth started to bother me more. I elected to wait awhile and come back in a few months for another checkup and cleaning. read more

Dr. Yung, I've been going to since I was a little boy and I think he's still good. He actually cares about you and will do what he can to help your teeth. Atmosphere? Great, lively, and friendly. Service? It's appointment only, so you get there, usually it's not so busy so you don't have to wait much. If you're getting a teeth cleaning, it's pretty fast, but Dr. Yung does take his time and doesn't act like a Know it all like some doctors I've been too. read more

Have been going to Dr Yung for years and he treats everyone like family. Never have trouble getting an appointment when I need one and they are always prompt in bringing me back. Dr. Yung takes great care with my teeth and offers good eye protection for me as well as him wearing a full face mask so you can feel confident in his office's hygiene practices.
