What a lovely intimate restaurant. Mostly locals. Friendly service. Authentic food. This place is…read moreall about meat. We had appetizers of lardo, slices gossamer thin with toasted bread and wonderful salami. We followed that with penne with a sauce of ragu and artichokes and finished with thinly sliced steak and mushrooms. A bottle of Frescolbaldi Brunello de Montalcino and a couple of macchiatos rounded out our lovely two hour lunch.

We wanted a carnivorous lunch today so we searched for a meat place in Milan. Surprisingly there…read moreare many! A nice surprise actually, now I have my bookmarks full. Well we ended up choosing La Carbonaia and we were not left disappointed, or at least, not completely. The place is very small and characteristic, the grill is front and center with a display of costate fiorentine in front. I like the vibe. They bring a complimentary appetizer, mondeghili, typical Milanese fried meat balls, de-li-cious. I order a grigliata mista and the others order a fiorentina. The grigliata mista is kind of disappointing, especially the serving size. It's a very small plate with just three types of meats, I expected more quantity. It was very good, but not filling at all. The fiorentina was delicious, with some very tender pieces and other not so tender ones. Very rare, they don't even ask how you want it, that's the way you have to have it anyway, all in all a good experience.

Here's all I know about Osterietta:…read more + During lunch, many of the dishes are prepared in an open kitchen concept. For example, I had a salad ant there is bar in the middle of the restaurant that is loaded with fresh vegetables. It is here that my salad was constructed. Our waiter added the vinegar and oil. + The servers are all long-time professionals. Well dressed and enjoying what they do - total pro's + The prosciutto (also sliced and prepared within eye-sight is as good as any I've ever eaten. + The pasta with shrimp and squid was outstanding. I've never had squid that was so "not chewy". Perfect blend of seafood and sauce and pasta + Overall an over the top superior lunch dining experience. I'd go back here in a heartbeat. + Prosciutto, salad, two primo (pasta) courses, bread, wine and espresso €70 including tip. Like I said, total pro's here.

And the prices were great too! The wine list may be a bit expensive for a full bottle but I believe they are very very good wines. The staff was very accommodating to us "Americanos" and did very well speaking English to us. I can't believe they have such few reviews! Appetizers were €5-15 and main dishes €10-40, sides and desserts €5-12. It really is mainly the wine list that can be pricey. I'm sure they are worth it. If we are ever in Milan again, we certainly will be returning. What a gem to find this place, so sad it's our last day.

The waiters and waitresses are very young and really do their best, but they make many basic serving mistakes. The salad we got with our meat was a mix of greens with two slices of carrot.. There are sachets of maionese and ketchup on the table, fast food style. Plates were served cold. Other odd things I noticed was: - WiFi has no code which is not secure when logged in, - they didn't have any alcohol free beer. Toilets are clean. They have an outside seating area not visible from the street/main entrance at the back of the restaurant.

I came for the pizza, but was surprised to see that they are the "King of Steak" in this town. The pizza is awesome (remember to eat with a fork) and I will return to try the steaks (use fork here too) as well. Beer is outstanding with Weizen and IPA's on tap. I had the capricciosa pizza which has tomato, mozzarella, cooked ham, olives, mushrooms and artichokes. The artichokes made the pizza even more delicious. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They speak English better than my Italian so no complaints here. Did I say I was coming back for the beer... I mean steak?
