Two special dinner outings to this fine dining restaurant were fantastic. The food is prepared with love and care by a creative chef using sourced ingredients. I appreciate the thoughtful menu with upscale vegetarian and vegan selections. I haven't meet the chef (Chris) but when eating his food he feels as familiar as a long-time friend. I've met his wife (Terri) hostessing the dining room with the same attention to creating a great dining experience at the table as Chris does in the kitchen. Their teamwork shows. This dynamic duo not only serve up quality dining in a lovely spot on a river in the north, they have Boshkung craft beer (the brewery is attached to the restaurant and sells take out), and they host an annual, highly successful fundraiser for households needing help with heating costs, and they make their dining experience available to a wider customer base -- as well as rewarding their regulars -- with imaginative seasonal Prix Fixe menus. The Prix Fixe starts up for winter but look for it in fall and into spring. The menu offers choice of appetizer, main and dessert with vegetarian options in each category. The beautiful thing about these specials is being able to attend a bit more frequently and try a wider selection of unique dishes. I have yet to catch the live music that is set to start on Thursdays for the winter. When I go with a couple of friends it will be interesting to see if we sit in the dining room, or the long bar or small, cozy lounge. Each option is inviting in it's own way. And finally... rounding out the experience, the staff and servers have been super on each visit. Rhubarb is all about great food but every detail that supports the enjoyment of that has been seen to. A nice spot by the lake with a screened outdoor area. Always has a selection of interesting meals that include some basic and some creative choices. The paces is adapted to fit the customer (we wanted, and had, a nice leisurely meal). They have a broad wine list with something for all tastes and prices. read more

Rhubarb - a small house in the snow - German Near Me - Minden Hills, Ontario

There used to be a restaurant on the NY State Thruway called The Big Apple (if I remember correctly) with a sign that said "Good food takes time to prepare. Your order will be ready in two minutes!" Rhubarb has moved to its new location. Lunch was the chicken pot pie; the beer was the "Dark Ale". The beer list is extensive and well worth investigating. I had heard that the service was slow (and it seemed so!) but the place was full and one cannot complain about that! Well, I guess you can but why bother! If it appears to be slow in servicing, remember that the food is not being prepared using microwaves. The food and beer were excellent; I'll be back! read more

We had a GREAT meal at Rhubarb's Eagle Lake location in the fall of 2013 and expected another great meal when we returned to their new location at the intersection of Hwy 35 and 118 in Carnarvon in April 2014. Boy was I disappointed. The menu is less interesting. They have gone downscale. The dining room has a lower ceiling and is noisier. And the service was poor. When asked where a beer was from, our server didn't know. When asked what kind of steak was on the menu, she didn't know and had to ask the chef. When I asked for a second glass of red wine, she asked, "the Shiraz or the Merlot?" not seeming to know what I'd had first. When I gave our waitress a credit card to pay the bill, she brought just the visa chit. It had no place to add a tip. I was surprised and asked for the detailed bill. She brought it but all it showed was ten lines marked "food", two marked "misc", two marked "wine" and one marked "beer". It was probably correct but not very illuminating. On the plus side, my steak was very tasty. My dining companions had mixed comments on the food. In my view, Rhubarb has gone from an excellent restaurant when it was on Eagle Lake to a run of the mill restaurant in its new location. read more
