She was able to get on the 7th floor of her dorm, with a view of this park and river from her bed. Pretty damn cool. The park itself has a long walking trail with tones of shade and lots to see along the way. There are observation decks, river winning inlets, boat ramps, an area for the Alabama Row Team to launch from. There is a cool statue of Minerva in the middle of the park. Here is some info as to why: Who is she? Minerva, a Roman goddess with an entire laundry list of characteristics, including wisdom, law, justice, victory, strategy and arts. The owl, also symbolizing wisdom, is often depicted as her companion. But why is she here, on the University of Alabama campus? "The statue is Minerva, the Roman Goddess of wisdom, who also adorns the University's institutional seal," said UA President Stuart R. Bell. "She is a notable reminder of UA's commitment to serving others and how we are all one community with a shared vision of impacting the world through teaching, research and service." On the UA seal, Minerva is depicted wearing attire proper for a more ancient time - a long, flowing gown. They have done a great job keeping it natural while providing some amenities. We will be back again and again over the next 4-9 years, however long it takes the kiddo to move on from UA. '25 - 89/111

In the evening hours with the sun setting, it was a nice walk and I wasn't the only one to notice that. The walkways are (leashed) dog friendly and several families were out and about. There was a couple sitting on a blanked having a picnic as well as some weird looking photo shoot in a bubble. There is limited parking at the eastern end and I lucked out with a space. You might do better to park at the amphitheater and make the walk. There are no other active facilities here. I did not spot a playground or restrooms. From an unbiased perspective, how can you not rate Bama football five stars? The Crimson Tide have…read morewon 16 national championships: 1925, 1926, 1930, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2020. Thirteen came in the poll era which began in 1936. Three have come in the current College Football Playoff era. Alabama football is undoubtedly the best in modern times. The school has legendary coaches Bear Bryant (six titles) and Nick Saban (seven titles) to thank for that. Side note: Alabama currently has the second-most national championships. Yale leads with 18. The Bulldogs' first title came in 1874 and their last in 1927. Bama captured their latest national championship earlier this month (January 11, 2021) in a convincing 52-24 trouncing of No. 3 Ohio State at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens (home of the Dolphins). On New Year's Day, the No. 1-ranked Tide had beaten No. 4 Notre Dame, 31-14, in the College Football Playoff semifinal (Rose Bowl). Despite an usual season that was played during a global pandemic, Alabama still managed to play and win 13 games (undefeated). Saban missed only one game due to a positive COVID-19 test, the Iron Bowl against then-No. 22 Auburn (the Tide won, 42-13, Thanksgiving weekend). Saban is the first head coach to win a college football national championship in three different decades (2000s, 2010s, and 2020s). Also, according to ESPN, Alabama became the first team in the poll era to win six titles in a 12-season span. The only other team to win six titles in 25 years or less was also Alabama, with six titles in 19 seasons from 1961 to 1979: https://twitter.com/ESPNStatsInfo/status/1348856150259806209. Somewhat surprisingly, despite all the five-star talent that has come through Tuscaloosa, the Tide have only had three Heisman Trophy winners: Mark Ingram (2009), Derrick Henry (2015), and Devonta Smith (2020). Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma (seven winners each) and Southern Cal (six) have more. Bama is presently tied with a bunch of other football schools to have three Heisman winners: Army, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, and Nebraska. With a capacity of 101,821, Alabama's on-campus stadium, Bryant-Denny Stadium (opened in 1929), is the 10th-largest stadium in the world, but only the fourth largest in the SEC. As for Alabama lowlights, for me, No. 1 is Harvey Updyke: https://youtu.be/Yyc7lcGCMI0. He infamously poisoned trees at Toomer's Corner in Auburn in 2011. On the bright side, Bama also has legendary superfan Phyllis Perkins from Mulga: https://youtu.be/XUG_IXEA1tI. Note on 2/1/2021: Yelp changed the business listing where I posted this review. Yelp changed it from "Alabama Crimson Tide Football" (correctly categorized under the Yelp category Amateur Sports Teams) to the "Crimson Tide Foundation," which is the university's athletic fundraising entity. I've submitted edits to correct. If you see this listed under the Foundation's listing, it was Yelp's doing, not mine.
