This sculpture is the work of Jerald Jacquard, a former instructor at the School of Fine Arts at IU in Bloomington, and was made in 1975. It can be found in the temporary exhibit area near the Indiana State Museum's Watanabe Gardens. It is between the Indiana State Museum and the Eiteljorg Museum, just off of the circle in front of the museum. It is made of corten steel and concrete and is currently on loan from the Jacquard family private collection. It was installed in April 2021 and will be around until at least the end of 2022.
The temporary exhibit space that the sculpture is located in is dedicated to Colleen Smyth, a
woman who worked in museum's education department and passed away unexpectedly in 2015. There is a plaque located in the area commemorating the dedication of the space to Smyth.
The sculpture is in great condition, especially considering its age. It is bright yellow and grabs your attention. I find this sculpture as abstract as it gets. And since I don't have a clear explanation of this piece. I have to come up with my own. I cannot even start to describe the piece though other than it is a huge yellow structure.
It is elevated and balanced on only three touch points, suspended on cement blocks. Jacquard believes this feature would visually deconstruct the mass and weight of the piece and give it the suggestion of movement by leading the viewer's eye through and around the piece. I know.....that's deep. And it did not work for me.
Either way it is an impressive piece and is large, like a rhino. I guess if I squint and use my imagination, I can see a rhino in there somewhere. I think it is worth a look if you are in the area or passing by. I would not make a special trip of it or anything.
As with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful pieces of public art on campus, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. There are literally tons of sculptures in White River State Park to see and there is also 3 Awesome Museums (Indiana State Museum, NCAA Hall of Champions, and Eiteljorg Museum), that you can check out as well. read more
