Grand Bazaar NYC - Great handmade bags! 3/2025

We visited Grand Bazaar NYC on the Upper West Side and really enjoyed the atmosphere. The market is…read moreone of the oldest and largest weekly flea markets in New York City, running every Sunday with both indoor and outdoor vendors. It has a fun and lively vibe with a mix of vintage items, handmade crafts, jewelry, artwork, clothing, collectibles, and food stands all in one place. What we liked most was how easy it was to spend a few hours just walking around and exploring different local vendors and small businesses. The market feels very New York, with lots of unique finds and creative products you do not usually see in regular stores.

It made my visit to the Bazaar all the more pleasant. I've been coming to Grand Bazaar for more years than I care to remember, having taken a break for ten -- okay twenty -- years. Can't put my finger on why, perhaps I'm not as interested as I used to be. While the market is vibrant and busy, it's not as it was. Perhaps not as much diversity in wares. (I used to get a lot of pottery, art and vintage jewelry.) Back in the day, my friends and I would go to the East Village and buy funky old fur jackets for a song. I kind of had that in the back of my mind coming here. (There are many vintage coat vendors.) But prices have risen considerably. (What hasn't?!) The market is open Sundays, year 'round. Despite buying nothing, I know I'll be back. (Maybe coats get cheaper when it's warmer.) Plus, I like strolling around on the upper westside, which has a different flavor than the eastside, where I live.

It doesn't feel great writing a two-star review of Housing Works, but nowadays, it also doesn't…read morefeel great patronizing this Housing Works -- sure, its mission is commendable, but as the prices have soared and the merchandise quality has fallen, the shop is basically just a better option than throwing my clothes, books, etc. in the trash when I no longer want them. On my latest visit, I first dropped off a bag with two suit jackets, three J.Crew dress shirts and a small piece of exercise equipment. Then, while browsing, I encountered a 7-ounce Mrs. Meyer's scented candle priced at $10 (same price as retail), an old-fashioned Geoffrey Beene tie priced at $45 (truly eye-popping for this label) and countless dive-bar-caliber beer and wine glasses priced as high as brand-new versions would cost on Amazon. I could go on, but that's a solid microcosm of this store: Diamonds in the rough are vanishingly rare, and if you happen to stumble upon something desirable, the price will very likely make you question whether you're really in a thrift shop that's selling things it got for free. P.S. It's worth noting that other HW locations have equally mediocre Yelp ratings, so this isn't just a reflection of UWS donations being bad or UWS commercial rents being high. Moreover, in Manhattan, great stuff is undoubtedly being donated. I've heard that nicer items are sometimes sold at special events, but that the prices aren't any better; regardless, special events don't do anything for 99% of customers.

E.g. an old cashmere sweater full of holes $30, a small yarn of wool not enough for making a cap $10, tacky no quality jewelry above $20, etc. Still some people come and are looking for some "treasures", this cannot happen, because all those might never reach the store shelves. However, I would give a high credit to a foreign born owner (barber) to establish those stores to absorb at least to some extent so much clothing and other items that otherwise would have finished in the garbage cans. This only underlines an urgent need to establish a high capacity thrift stores in dense populated affluent Manhattan areas, at least 3 mega Good Will stores were closed in Manhattan during last few years, apparently because of a total incompetence of the top highly overpaid staff and not dealing with mass corruption at all levels, best valuable items hardly make it into stores or appear on online auctions. So, if a foreign born owner can run those stores and still with some profit, why across the country tax free store chain decades in existence cannot do the same?

I'm appalled by the way Jonathan, the owner, responds to many of the 1-star reviews here on Yelp. Not only does he appear to respond mostly to negative feedback, but his tone often comes across as rude and overly defensive. Jonathan, having a business for 30 years doesn't give you a free pass to be dismissive toward people who are simply sharing their experiences. There's always room for growth and improvement. Instead of being combative, take the time to really listen to your customers and consider their concerns--this could lead to positive changes and an even better shopping experience. That said, I visited this consignment store a few days ago, and Jonathan himself was actually very helpful and knowledgeable. He took the time to explain the consignment process and was very pleasant throughout. The store itself is a bit overcrowded with clothing and shoes, which can feel overwhelming, but the selection is solid and the pricing is reasonable considering the focus on high-end pieces. While the clothing leans more mature, there are definitely options for all ages. This shop is exclusively for women--I didn't see any men's items, but that's not a dealbreaker for me. The clearance section is located upstairs, and while I did find a lot of regular designer names, I didn't spot many high-end pieces there aside from a few pairs of shoes. Also, the upstairs area definitely needs better ventilation--AC or at least a few fans would make a big difference, as it was uncomfortably warm. As for handbags, I might have missed them since I was more focused on clothes and shoes, but I didn't see any notable high-end options in that category during my visit. I plan to return soon with more time to explore. Despite my concerns about how the owner responds to feedback online, I didn't experience any issues personally during my visit. I actually had a positive shopping experience, and I would recommend this store. I just hope that in the future, there's some improvement in how customer feedback is handled publicly--it really does make a difference.
