Regardless, during that time I turned 50 and my body only changed for the better. I became stronger and leaner and more flexible. Bree - the owner - is pretty hard core about her practices but also is very supportive and encouraging and creative. This personal approach to Classical Pilates is very effective and worth your time, effort, and money. I had attended group Pilates classes before and it wasn't the same- or even close. If you are looking to feel and look better, I recommend working with Equilibrium Pilates for a few months to see those results.

From the time, Brie (the owner/head instructor) returned my phone call, I knew that I would like her energy and enthusiasm. But now I can honestly say-Brie is my hero. I didn't know what to expect so I didn't have any particular thoughts before arriving. I walked in and saw several stations with different types of equipment. My only thought was-"She doesn't really expect me to be able to use any of this." . So I admit it I was nervous, embarrassed, and thought about running out of there before my session started. But Danielle (the receptionist) was good because she answered my questions and checked on my while I waited. She also was very positive and friendly.So I decided to stay. . Brie was great. She kept talking to me and encouraging me through out the session. I worked as hard if not harder than I do when I do cardio at the gym. But it was better. My back felt good at the end. The other people there were good too. They mention not to laugh even though one of them was a dancer. In any case, it was excellent. Brie was great. She didn't even seem to mind my buckets of sweat. Thrive has a similar quality. It feels built from real experience rather than from a brand deck. Hally has clearly created this place with care and precision, and it is a gift to see a local Rittenhouse operator build something this thoughtful in Philadelphia. The studio is consistently clean, the desk team has always been professional, and the whole operation feels calm and well-held. The clientele adds a lot to the atmosphere, too. They seem like people who have been all over the world and seen the full continuum of people, places, and things, but would never tell you that; they just absorb it. I especially want to give real credit to Lisa Grunberger, one of the wisest yoga teachers I have ever encountered. My yoga journey started with Elena Brower, and Lisa reminds me of that same era of teachers: deeply wise about physiology, a lifelong student of the practice, and unusually perceptive about life. She embodies yoga in a way that feels earned, not performed. There is something very moving about watching someone age gracefully while still working hard to stay current, flexible, and fully alive in the work. Lisa's music deserves its own mention because it is extraordinary. Her class soundtracks map to an era just before music became fully digitized, when taste still had to be gathered, carried, and lived with over time. The tracks are rich, discerning, and never forced. I have had so many moments in her Friday midday class where I hear something and think, "Oh my gosh, this song is amazing" because the music is not just background; it quietly deepens the whole experience. Life and budget have shifted, so I have not been back to Thrive recently, but I know I will return when I can. Thrive has that low key, sophisticated, quietly chic feeling that never seems to be trying to sell itself. It feels more like an academy and a commune than a business, which is rare for a city studio. I admire what Hally has built here, and hope to return soon! I registered online (about 25 dollars per class) and headed over to the studio about 15 minutes for my class. While it's a bit nerve wracking walking into a studio for the first time, especially after not being in one for over a decade, the staff was so helpful and welcoming. The young woman at the front desk helped me check in and directed me to the studio. She gave me a heads up that another class was wrapping up and to hang out on the side and take a seat until my class started. Noelle's class was fantastic! She created such an inclusive and welcoming space. She encouraged making adjustments in the warmups and choreography to fit your abilities and comfort. The class started with stretches, then some across the floor warm ups, then learning the number and ended with an optional cool down. There was a nice mix of abilities throughout the class. The space is large and clean with room to leave your personal belongings in eyesight. Will definitely be doing this again soon!

I took my friend to a beginner's class (though I am moderately experienced myself) so that he might *hopefully* have a better experience than he did at Amrita. Happily, we chanced upon John's Beginner Series and wound up having the lucky attentions of this wonderful, passionate instructor. He was welcoming, helpful, and an absolutely IDEAL person to introduce yoga postures to my friend. He focused on alignment in every pose, making sure the whole body was in the best possible position, which is just the kind of detailed instruction a beginner really needs. This was, of course, even more focused than a normal beginner's class, as we wound up having a private session in this lovely little studio, located just across from Milk Crate coffee on Columbia. I know that we will absolutely return to Is YOGA and my friend plans to take more classes with John and Chae on a regular basis. Highly recommended! If you are completely new to yoga, you would be wise to sign up for John's beginner series at once, as you will be schooled in the foundations needed for building a solid practice.

Founded in 2002, Philly Hot Yoga is approaching a quarter century in Philadelphia, and that longevity is visible in the maturity of the entire operation. Following the classic Bikram method, each class moves through 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises in the same order every time. The studio offers 60, 75, and 90 minute formats, with the practice space heated to 105 degrees and 50% humidity. I leave completely soaked and usually need a while for my body to cool down, which can feel intense when you are just beginning. What once felt punishing now feels like a deep rinse, clearing out physical tension and whatever mental clutter I carried upstairs. Tucked above Sherman Brothers at 1520 Sansom Street, the entrance can be easy to miss the first time. Walk toward the shoe store, take the door immediately to the right, and head upstairs to the third floor. The building has an older Philadelphia texture, with bright paint, welcoming energy, and quirks earned over decades. I especially appreciate it when the windows are open before or after class in winter, letting cold air move through as everyone recovers from the heat. Throughout my visits, everything has been clean and tranquil, and the staff members have been kind, helpful, and flexible. I remember once forgetting a card or having some similar payment issue, and they handled it with generosity instead of turning it into a production. The locker rooms are fairly small, and the men's showers are tight, but everything necessary is there when you need to clean up and continue your day. A filtered water fountain makes it easy to refill your bottle, which is essential to feeling good after that much heat and sweat, and towels are available to rent for $2. Dan, Lauren, and Chris have all taught classes I especially enjoyed, though I have probably practiced with more teachers than I can recall from my account history. The instruction is precise and encouraging without becoming performative, which suits a sequence built around patience and sustained attention. My wrists and shoulders have absorbed too many years of planks, pushups, and pullups, so this practice has become an important counterbalance. It reaches deep into my lower back, quads, and hamstrings, helping correct the subtle forward hunch caused by years of running and sitting at a keyboard. Although the schedule also includes Yin, all levels of Vinyasa, and Hot Pilates, every class I have taken here has been Classic Hot Bikram Yoga. That sequence still feels like the studio's center of gravity. A nearly 25-year run says a great deal in a city where independent fitness businesses face constant pressure and rapid turnover. Philly Hot Yoga has endured by staying clean, welcoming, and true to itself. I love its soul, appreciate its roots, and feel grateful that a place this uniquely Philadelphia is still here and succeeding.

The small group format means lots of attention, if you're doing an exercise incorrectly or struggling with a weight the trainer corrects you right away or offers a different version. As someone who is easily intimidated by free weights, these classes are a great way to get more comfortable with them. My one critique would be that package pricing is high compared with other workout studios in the area (city fitness thrive, orange theory, amrita etc) . It would be nice if they offered a monthly package that was priced around $80 without annoying subscription cancelation rules. Still if you view the class as more of a group personal training session it has great value.

The trainers there are really nice and give you a lot of great technique and information about how to get a great workout. The rates are reasonable and the other clients in the group classes all seem to enjoy the classes as well. I like the fact that you can sign up for the classes that you want to attend online. This way you know who is teaching the class and what the theme of the class is. There is plenty of parking in the area and they also offer flexible hours for the group classes that fit my schedule. So far so good.
