I had already tried several, but all they wanted to do was rewrite the entire manuscript--by themselves. So, I called Paul, fully thinking that I would end up with another deadbeat editor. But Paul was different. And his approach to editing was different. First, he was not judgmental about my work, and second, he explained how we--not just he--would edit the book. He downloaded my manuscript into his Mac, and with me sitting at his terminal next to him (this was before the power of the modern internet), he proceeded to read the manuscript out loud to me. With this method, he located the dangling participles, misplaced modifiers, and non sequiturs. He asked me questions as we went along, to clarify thoughts, events, and stories, and together we corrected the manuscript as we went along.
