The sight of people having what looked like excellent tart flambé through the windows was what made us stop. The sign said full, but we saw people waiting and so did we. The turnover was quite fast and we were able to get seated without excessive waiting, although this was after we figured that the door was not locked and that we could simply peek in and get the host's attention. There was one person attending to all the tables and she spoke English, so that was nice. We loved our experience and will go back again next time!

As we wandered further into the city near the churches and phenomenal landmarks, Le Bistro du Koifhus was quiet and quaint; just the perfect spot for us to people watch and enjoy our time. La Bistrot du Koifhus succeeded in meeting our expectations on spectacular cappuccinos, and in their window of their little coffee cafe, their cream apricot tart was calling for our attention. I could not help but ask my love to order one for us to share, and we were glad that we did so. Beautifully presented and so light, it was enough to hold us over for our dinner. Always been fond of dreamy little cafes in France, you will find plenty in Colmar, every corner you turn to x

The flow of the meal was perfect and as this is a small establishment there was a very family feel to it. Personally greeted pre meal and thanked by every member of the staff as we left. Food was outstanding and very filling...salmon was perfectly prepared and the veal with mushrooms was great. Things were prepared fresh and in a great simple manner. Nothing hiding behind salt or sauce, it was all enjoyable from beginning to end... Will return!

The owner, the very friendly Monsieur G. welcomed and seated every guest arriving himself, which certainly adds to the atmosphere. Soon some good bread and homemade spread arrived with my glass of wine, which I had ordered instead or as an aperitiv. Feeling adventures (usually do), I ordered the tête de veau, which was served "off the bone" on a big plate of salad, with pan fried potatoes, vinaigrette and sauce gribiche on the side. Although I helped my delicious food down with some more good wine, I had to decline dessert, as I was quite satisfied and had a good espresso instead. Of the wines I especially enjoyed a Pinot Noir from Alsace. When I asked the waiter who the producer was, he came back with name, address and telephone number. Good thing, as I was in Alsace a few days later and looked up the vigneron, Domaine René Kientz in Blienschwiller, where I found some more good wines at decent prices.

They also served some mean, and I mean seriously flavored and delicious, French and German style cutlets, meats, chicken, steak, roulades and much more! Basel is known world-wide for small-er local corner pubs and restaurants. Other towns have drafty holes-in the wall. Others have a dark bar with two tables. Basel combines bars + refined food restaurants into one. Like Sommereck! Sommereck is German for 'Summer Corner'. The large. beer that the bar tender served was ice cold, served in a new, pristine, and clean glass and best of all: fully filled. The tables have table cloths and it's a very upscale, clean and fancy dining experience. They have coatracks. They offer newspapers. My French 'Burgundy-Style' cordon bleu was soo tender, filled fat and hefty with a delicious Gouda and heaps of ham and other cheeses. The salad was pristine, hand cut in the kitchen - the dressing light and delicious. This is an excellent Swiss restaurant for meetings, social outings and get-togethers. The food is way above average. The staff friendly. It's bright and homey. Great beer corner for a hefty and clear poured Swiss or German brew on cold afternoons or hot days! Menu rotated slightly in accordance with the season. Serves nice wines by the glass, tea and desserts. Review: 5

I am glad to say that I finally tried this fairly cosy and welcoming Italian spot after having…read morediscovered it while walking through the neighborhood on a previous trip to Basel. Sommereck's service was friendly and competent. There seemed to be a good rapport between the staff and the guests. I could well imagine Sommereck being a regular spot for those living in the 'hood. Our food came out both reasonably quickly and appropriately hot--always a good thing. I ordered one of the many gnocchi dishes on the menu, alla bolognese. To all you Americans: the shape of the gnocchi reminded me of a tater-tot. It's silly, but I found the look of them amusing. The taste of the dish was quite good, but almost a bit too savory. The hubs ordered pizza with ham and a fried egg in the middle. The runny yolk made for good 'gravy' and I helped myself to a bit of chewy/crispy crust with which to sop up some of the egg. The crust was thin yet robust enough to not become soggy under both the sauce and cheese. I was duly impressed and so was the hubs. Sommereck, appropriately named, is housed on the ground floor of a charming, old, corner apartment building. I quite enjoyed its high ceilings and large windows. The lighting, however, was a bit too bright for my liking. The resto, too, boasts a rather large outdoor eating area that would be great for groups. Our visit saw cloudy skies and cold temps, so we opted for indoors, but there were a few brave souls out back enjoying wine and a chat. Visitors to this part of town would do well to dine at Sommereck!
