In Germany, particularly in Bavaria, stricter COVID-19 Prevention Health Measures Ordinance went in effect in early November 2020. The immediate affect was the closing down of all non-essential businesses including restaurants, retail stores, etc. I still remember how disappointed I was by this since it happened just as I arrived in Germany. Today we actually had a sit-down meal for the first time! Yay, things are finally getting closer to the new normal in Bavaria! There were several restaurants and cafés set up with outdoor seating on this visit. It wasn't a particularly warm day, and there was a little breeze to make it feel chilly. We chose Gasthaus zur Sonne because it was a little set back from the busy street. Just as our drink order was served, they turned overhead heaters and made it more comfortable for us. Service was very pleasant...maître de/cashier lady was very cheerful (perhaps almost over the top), and took our food and drink order right away as we were seated. Young female server was somewhat quiet perhaps keeping balance with gregarious older lady, yet very pleasant and courteous. Our food was very good. It wasn't anything fancy...just bratwurst and salads (beneath the pile of lettuce, there were assortment of typical Franconian pickled vegetables which we really like). Sauerkraut was very good, too. It was altogether a very enjoyable meal. They have both German and English menus.

Disclaimer: This review is only for the restaurant - not the guesthouse…read more My family and I dined here the day before the town's fall festival, so it was fairly busy and we were unable to get a seat outside due to the size of our group. The outdoor dining area looked like one of the best in town with great lighting, flowers, and lots of tables - would have been a prime spot for people watching and enjoying the nice weather. The interior was smaller, but seemed to have multiple rooms (we sat in the front one). Our server was extremely friendly and helpful, especially since there seemed to be a small discrepancy between the English and German menus provided. I ordered a seasonal special with chanterelle mushrooms, a cream sauce, and bread dumpling. It was very rich without being overly filling. Portions were fairly large and typical compared to most places in Germany. The rest of my family enjoyed their meals, wine and beer, although I can't recall what anyone else ordered - I was too focused on my own dish! I'd definitely eat here again if I make it back to Dinkelsbühl.

The tomato soup and Mozzarella caprese is by far my favorite thing here and I come here just for those two alone. Although I am not vegan it is great that they have a full vegan menu which is really cool and i can certainly appreciate that. The lady that waits tables is also really nice. I would definitely recommend for the hot tomato soup, the caprese salad and gluwein.. those are wonderful!

I could easily have eaten two lunches and then gone back for two dinners and had different things from the menu each time. Burritos, lasagnes, a list of vegan pizzas, cakes, milkshakes, and more (though it isn't a strictly vegan/vegetarian restaurant). Normally my husband & I both order different menu items to share but from the 5.50 euro lunch deal menu (which included a free soft drink) we both fancied the vegan cheese lasagne. There was a lot of tomato sauce and I still felt a bit hungry after mine, but we shared a slice of tiramisu (or what was described as tiramisu anyway), and a slice of pistachio torte - both were delicious. I couldn't leave without sampling one of their many vegan shakes, so I had an iced espresso/amaretto/vanilla combination. The only thing letting the place down for me was the service. Our server wasn't rude, but neither was I overly impressed. She seemed quite grumpy and didn't smile at us once, and it was a lovely sunny day and we had already ordered our meals before my husband spotted there was an outdoor seating area as he went to find the bathroom. Also when we received the bill she waited then and there for me to pay, and it was a little awkward as I was double checking my coin values and counted out my 10 and 20 cent coins. I would give this restaurant 4.5 if possible, just because there would be room for improvement in this area, but the menu options were so good. (I still have not much clue as to who Kasper Hauser/Kaiser Soze is, even after an audio guide around the town. His museum exhibition is all in German, which unfortunately I can't read.)
