I was so excited to try this restaurant but my experience here left me quite underwhelmed…read more The restaurant is reminiscent of those small restaurants in Italy that I love with the glass display at the front with an assortment of different antipasti, cheeses and hams. They are probably only around 10 table on the inside plus a couple tables outside. It's located on a really beautiful little street in the 9th district so it's nice to sit outside and enjoy the weather and ambience. There was only one waiter so service was pretty slow. The menu is pretty limited too. My table ordered a branzino pasta, branzino fillet and a calamari pasta but the kitchen somehow ran out of calamari and shrimp so the third pasta also ended up coming with branzino. Too. Much. Branzino. The food itself was good but nothing spectacular. For a restaurant with the name "La Pasteria", I expected to be blown away by their pasta. I expected more options to and for it to taste phenomenal but there were only like 5 options and they were just... good. The best part of the meal was probably the complimentary appetizer: tomato and mozerella soup served in a cute little cup- perfect for dipping bread into. Overall a-okay. Not bad if you're in the neighborhood and craving Italian, but would not go out of my way to eat here again.

We ordered the grilled calamari with arugula, spicy salami pizza, and the daily special, chicken saltimbocca with tagliatelle in truffle sauce. Creme brulee and tiramisu for dessert. Pure bliss across the board! This is a keeper for someone like me who's from out of town and appreciates a reliable dinner option worthy of the trip outside of the city center.

Heavily frequented by locals, so I guess our good experience was not only a one off. Two drinks and two pizza resulted in a 25euro bill, which I find appropriate. The restaurant looks nice, surely decent enough to take your sweetheart out, and the food is excellent. The service was friendly however not over ambitious.

Wow, this pasta was really amazing! And such a good deal!…read more After an intense cycling work out the cook prepared two basic pasta dishes (pasta pesto and pasta with asparagus and tomato) for us. What a delight! And that for only €14. They have way more than just pasta dishes, so it wont take long before I come back here. The kitchen is open until late, staff is kind and the cakes behind the counter look very appealing. They change their menu frequently and offer specials for weekday and Sunday lunch. A must-go in Vienna's 2nd district!

Anyway, the night that I did try it was during Super Bowl evening, before the game (though the game was actually shown at 0200 in the morning here). For some reason, that particular day, I said to myself, I am going to try this place. I walked in, and wasn't really sure that they were even open, because they had some kind of private birthday party going on. But the hostess there said, come on in, have a seat, so I was already welcomed into the establishment, which is already a good start. I sat down, looked at the menu, and ordered the fish soup, the spaghetti carbonara, and some Grüner Veltliner wine while waiting. It didn't take very long for the food to arrive. The soup was pretty good. When the main course came out, the spaghetti carbonara, at first glance, it didn't look like a big portion, but after a few bites, I already knew it would be more than enough. The thing is, spaghetti carbonara is pasta with a rich cream sauce and bacon on top, so it's already quite rice in flavor. After the main course, I was looking at their desserts, and decided on the chocolate mousse, which was also delicious. As I have stated in past Yelp reviews, I am all about supporting small neighbourhood businesses, and I was quite satisfied with this establishment. I paid a total of €23 for soup, the main course, dessert, and three glasses of wine, which was not bad at all. And I threw in a good tip for the hostess, since the service was good and the food was great.

But to be great, a restaurant needs to serve great food, and on the night we were there, the food fell short. It started off very promising. They brought bread with a really nice garlic & pesto oil for dipping, and the salads were really fresh with delicious dressing. However, the mains weren't so good. The saltimbocca pork was over-cooked and tough, and was over-salted. The margherita pizza was basically a cheese pizza - we were expecting at least some green basil on it, but there wasn't any to be seen - we even asked, just in case we had mistakenly gotten the wrong order. Nope. And the pizza dough was a bit undercooked. This place has such potential, and it's in the cool Josefstadt neighborhood. If they raise their game in the kitchen, they could be really great.
