I just realized that…read morethis is a number one restaurant in Brno, which isn't saying much because the city's not known for their culinary heritage. In the beginning when they were explaining the meat and the fish, they were very theatrical which seemed very rehearsed and amateur. We couldn't really hear the waiter, because some of us were already very chatty after coming from a local beer pub. We ordered some meat, fish, and added in the foie and other appetizers and side of vegetables. The veggies were actually the best part of the meal, and that's saying a lot, because I'm not much of a veggie eater! :) But then generally the produce in Europe is far superior to what we get in the States! Foie gras was seared to perfection, but the accoutrements were just mediocre. One of our fish we had was turbot, and this is one of the easier fish to debone. However, with every annoying bite of the fish, I had to pick out a bone! Absolutely unacceptable! The staff weren't particularly friendly, but this is typical of Czech so I wasn't too offended. LOL We were having a good time with our group so slow service was not too bothersome either. The bill came to $200 per person, which is not too bad IF the food was great. My hubby and I paid $200pp at Field Restaurant in Prague which's a Michelin star restaurant! This restaurant, for the service and the food, is definitely not worth the price!

Borgo Agnese...Wow...the Czech Republic at its very best!…read more In the Czech Republic, Brno is to Prague what Chicago is to NYC...the country's "second City" and home to 400,000 warm, friendly and hard working Eastern Europeans. Had a magnificent dinner with 7 members of our company's Czech team at what is arguably the premier restaurant in the city. It is said to rival the best Mediterranean cuisine anywhere in this country including its capital of Prague. After enjoying a flavorful local brew from Bruno's Starobrno Brewery, we tried a local white wine from the well-regarded Moravia wine making region. It was absolutely over the moon. Our group also enjoyed some delicious hot appetizers including a lobster-stuffed pasta, some golden brown sautéed St. Jacques scallops and a dynamite Duck Consommé Soup. For our entrees, we chose either a grilled plate of a variety of steaks or a fresh seafood medley including Tuna, Halibut, Sea Bass and Cod. This is where Borgo Agnese really hit its stride with some of the freshest seafood and juiciest beef we'd ever experienced. Look at those pics! Borgo's service by a courteous team of bow-tied servers was right on the mark as my wine glass never went unfilled. We finished with several delightful dessert samplers. Borgo Agnese earns the pinnacle of Yelp ratings on every level....wow, what a meal!

The brewery also has a restaurant which is quite large. Upon entering the dining room is to the left. There are tables along one side of the wall that up a set of stairs to more tables. There are additional tables in the center of the dining room. Heading down a set of stairs leads to the main bar. The lighting fixtures are rather creative and make use of empty Starbrno bottles. The Sauerkraut Soup has a deep red hue studded with drizzles of sour cream. The soup is hearty and rich, and is loaded with pickled cabbage as the name suggests. The soup contains large mushrooms and potatoes, which give the soup an earthy flavor. The soup has a slightly sour finish from the sauerkraut. This was a very good dish, and would gladly order it again. The Caesar Salad contains fresh, crunchy romaine lettuce with homemade croutons and loads of parmesan cheese. The salad contained a generous amount of grilled chicken which was tender. The dressing had hints of anchovy, but there was way too much dressing and overpowered the salad. The Foie Gras was nicely seared on both sides, but since the slices were somewhat thin were slightly overcooked. It retained the rich, creamy, fatty texture however. The grilled apples added some sweetness to combat the richness of the foie. The Goulash contained very tender chunks of beef, but my main complaint was there wasn't much meat served. There was some carb overload as the dish was served with two potato pancakes, which were nice and crunchy, as well as bread. The dish was only lukewarm, so a bit of a disappointment. The sauce was also slightly bitter, which may be from too much paprika? The Beer Sponge-Biscuit Tiramisu was a take on the classic dish, served in a rustic fashion in a beer glass. The tiramisu had a hint of sour cream which gave the dish a slight tang. The dish was very good overall, but was somewhat misleading as the beer could not be discerned. The Pancakes with Lemon Sour Cream were unlike American pancakes. These looked like small hockey pucks, and was more reminiscent of a biscuit, but was a little lighter and fluffier. The cinnamon butter was light but not very spicy. The blueberries were plentiful, but not very sweet. The dish was good, but unusual when thinking of "pancakes". This dessert was not very sweet despite all of the sweet components. Pivovarska Starobrno is maybe the most "commercial" restaurant in Brno outside of KFC, but they do serve some good food at reasonable prices in a nice, relaxed atmosphere.

It is located near some of the schools so many students tend to patronize this place. The food is an eclectic mixture of different cultures, which is sometimes hard to pull off. Restaurants have a hard time specializing in one type of cuisine so branching out to many other different cuisines makes it even more of a challenge. The Pan Fried Dumpling tasted like store bought dumplings that had been coated then fried. They were mixed in with bacon and onions, and served with a massive amount of pickles. As the dumplings did not taste freshly made, this detracted from the dish. The beef dish came with several slices of beef that were fall apart tender, and served with a nice gravy. It came with a generous side salad that was full of fresh produce. The dish was also served with rice. The burger came with bacon and a large chili pepper, stem and all, with lettuce and caramelized onions. The burger was quite tasty, however it would have been better if the chili was cut into smaller pieces for better coverage of the burger, and without the stem. It was served with a small side salad, and roasted potatoes, which were nice and creamy inside. The pound cake has a somewhat interesting presentation. The pound cake was bake in a bundt type pan, but oddly the dessert contained 1 1/2 little cakes rather than just one or two. The pound cake was sitting inside of puddle of crème anglaise with berries and a generous dollop of whipped cream. The pound cake was somewhat dense as you would expect, but not dry. The pancakes were served with bananas and chocolate. When ordering the dish, the waiter described something more akin to a thicker crepe so actually having pancakes was surprising. The pancakes were fluffy but a tad dry. They would have been better if the dough was sweeter, but this may have been a Czech recipe. Kabaret Spacek is a great little neighborhood spot. The burgers are what seem to have put them on the map, along with very reasonable prices and good service.
