It gets you through some of the hardest times in your life. But when they get sick, it breaks your heart. My sweet shihtzu, Gunther, was diagnosed with congestive heart disease. We were told it was irreversible, and that he had 6 months left. Over the last few months, Gunther's health had been slowly deteriorating, but he was hanging in there. We were hoping he would make it to his 13th birthday next month. Unfortunately, his health took a turn for the worse over the weekend. He had trouble breathing and collapsed a few times, where he lost control of his body. That's when I came to Yelp and found Rest in Paws and Dr. Castillo. I called Dr. Castillo at 8am on a Sunday and she was at my house by 11am. She and her assistant were so kind, sensitive, and supportive. Ultimately, I didn't want my sweet boy to be in pain and Dr. Castillo agreed that he wouldn't feel any pain. I was told exactly what would happen, I never felt rushed in saying goodbye and Gunther left us peacefully, comfortably in his home surrounded by his siblings and his favorite toys. Even though I was an emotional wreck, Dr. Castillo and her assistant maintained professionalism and kindness throughout. Once Gunther had passed, they wrapped him in a blanket and placed him in a basket. We were able to take a few photos of him, and he looked like he was finally at peace. We opted for cremation and are waiting for his remains (which come in a wooden box). Dr. Castillo mentioned it takes about 2-3 weeks and that she would drop it off at our house. It never feels fair when you have to say goodbye to a loved one. But there is some comfort in knowing he passed peacefully, and we were there for him during his last moments. Dr Castillo is by far the best vet we've ever had, however we have only seen her to help our dogs pass on. She came highly recommended by someone in my husband's medical office when we knew the time was coming. First my sweet dog Rocky apparently developed cancer that my vet of 10 years couldn't identify. He was gone 3 weeks later. We knew the time was coming but things happened fast that he passed away while Dr Castillo was on her way to our home. We called for her help having never met us before and she came quite a distance to assist us. She prepared him and took him away, had him cremated with his special blanket and hand delivered him, his ashes to my home in a beautiful box and other memorabilia. 7 weeks later it was time for my elderly Lucy. The Dr came the same evening and helped her go to sleep ever so gently,put her in a beautiful basket and returned her as she did Rocky. As difficult as euthanizing a beloved pet is, I can't say enough good things about Dr. Castillo and her assistant Debi. After calling six different at home euthanasia veterinarians during this crazy Covid time, I knew I found the right fit for our family during my phone call with Dr. Castillo. She was the only veterinarian I contacted who made sure to ask caring questions about our pet and was extremely comforting during the call. On the actual day, they arrived Dr. Castillo and Debi treated our sweet pup as if she were their own. Doctor Castillo and Debi made the most difficult day of our lives one of comfort and caring. After 16 years with our black lab Cole, it was time to say goodbye. I researched many other in home vet care options as well as hospitals. No one came close to the level of compassion and professionalism as Rest in Paws.
