I had previously thought I'd have to do this convoluted bus/bus/tram connection to go around the top to get to the bridge to the island. Going across on a ferry is far easier than doing that. The ferry itself reminded me of the larger ones from Venice and of course the ones in New York, but with an interesting feature - you board and depart directly on the front of the vessel - and the ship is entirely symmetrical so it doesn't need to turn around ever. Our one issue was that we were unaware of the extra stop it sometimes makes between Gamla Stan and Djurgarden, and we got off there by mistake. We managed to grab a geocache and took some photos of Gamla Stan while we waited for the next ferry - if you do make that mistake, then just be sure to hit the call button at the ferry port, otherwise you might get skipped when the ferry goes direct. Otherwise, it was enjoyable, quick and comfortable enough for a ferry.

The main reason for taking Djurgårdsfärjan hoough, is the view you'll get of Stockholm. It's definitely a classic must-do in Stockholm, and no matter if you're going to Skansen, the amusement park Gröna Lund, the Wasa museum or any of the many other attractions on Djurgården, you can get there with Djurgårdsfärjan. Another advantage is that you can use your SL ticket on Djurgårdsfärjan - no matter if it's a montly card that most of us Stockholmers have, a tourist pass or a single zone A ticket you've just used for the subway or bus trip.

We paid 150kl/person for a return journey with a travel time of 2.5 hours return. Immediately next to the ferry office is the tourist boat office, which charges nearly 3x that amount. The website was fairly easy to access to obtain information and the woman at the counter was even more informative. She told us where we should go and gave us all the information. The ferries are pretty easy to use as you just turn up and get on the boat. Once on the boat you can buy your tickets. The boats we took had small cafes and tons of comfy seating. Viewing Stockholm and the surrounding area was wonderful. It provided a unique memorable experience with plenty of photo opportunities! We had a fantastic trip and really recommend this company.

The stops were easy to find and convenient to where we wanted to go, the map was pretty decent for a tour-bus map, and the commentary (headphones provided) was informative and interesting. Red Sightseeing also offers a canal and river tour, which was nice, quiet, and got us to some rarely seen areas of the city with very interesting architecture and lovely green space. The staff was helpful, courteous, and understanding when we made a scheduling/location error. All in all, this was an excellent, pleasant, and very affordable way to see much of Stockholm, to understand how important the waterways are to the city, and to get where we wanted to go. Do note that there are a few different red-colored hop-on hop-off buses and boats, so make sure you get the correct line.

You're provided with a map and a headphone. Easy enough! Where you get off from the bus, there's another ticket counter to purchase your ticket where you get on the boat, and we could have done all that, where we can also use the toilet (not in the same building), but it was around the corner, half a block from getting off the bus. We got off the boat after our tour, so we went back to where we got off from the bus, and the guy who sold us the ticket (saw us standing there!) and told us it's another half a block THAT WAY! So we missed the 1st Red bus! Yes, it had the Red Flag mark! Otherwise, we had fun with this boat tour!

As for Brika Cruises, I am very sorry to say that it was one of the worst experiences I ever had. Although there are cheap cabin options, it was not worth it at all. My boyfriend and I lived in Sweden for 9 months and wanted to see the Archipeligo. We booked this 22h cruise from Birka with a standard cabin and breakfast incl. We had seen the dinner options of the bistro on board and thought that would be nice to do. After ordering, the food was brought to us within 5 minutes, which indicated that it had been already cooked and standing for a bit! We noticed that straight away as the food was lukewarm/cold.. very dissapointing. Furthermore, our standard cabin was located directly next to the loading dock, where they were transferring goods until 2am and starting again from 6am in the morning. It created so much noise that we couldn't sleep. On top of that, our shower was stuck on an extremely hot temperature that we couldn't change! In the morning we had to wait for 20 minutes in line for breakfast, which was the smallest issue despite having pre-booked. Overall, I can never recommend anyone to travel with this company! Instead, please check the other options out there, as there are many. Hope this helps.

The boat was already full when we boarded, but they allowed at least 25 more people, same at the next stop. So, we all got to stand up the whole way back. I am 80 years old! Not only did we get standing places, but they do not offer either retired nor student prices, like Waxholmsbolaget does. They charged me 128 Swedish crowns for the two of us, versus 350 crowns at Strömma. will never go with them again!

Being from Minnesota, the area actually really really reminded us of our own national treasure, the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area. The landscape looks very similar and I'd guess (though I haven't looked at a map) that the two areas are similar latitude wise so that probably makes sense. The thing that was most surprising to us is that here at home, we have to drive six hours north almost into Canada to reach our favorite wilderness area, and here in Stockholm, you can be out on the water and enjoying nature in under half an hour from downtown (which is really urban and you can't even see the water). It's a really interesting mix of things and all in such a small geographic area. OK so if you choose this boat tour, as others have said, it's about 2.5 hours and basically takes you out and makes a loop. The boat is a nice boat ... large, with both indoor and outdoor seating,. So really you should be more than comfortable on your journey, though I can imagine that in the summertime and the height of tourist season, these boats are probably pretty packed. We were there in March, so the boat was less than half full, which was great. If you plan to sit upstairs outside to get the best possible view, bundle up. Even if it's warm out, it will be cold up there. The views are magnificent and the crew was super cool about letting you roam around the boat as you wished to take photos. The tour is also narrated, and our most impressive tour guide did the tour narration in English, German and Dutch after surveying the people on the boat to find out what languages they speak. I have no idea how many languages this gentleman speaks but he literally repeated everything in three different languages and fielded questions. Very impressive. The boat takes you by a lot of cool stuff, particularly the waterside amusemement park that sits on the banks of the water. But other than that, quite a value for the money and a really really wonderful way to see Stockholm!
