The Olney Theatre…read more What an absolute gem of an institution nestled in Olney, Maryland. It's a shame it took me this long to discover such a local treasure. A couple of friends and I attended a performance of A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable introduction to this wonderful theater. The Roberts Mainstage seats just over 400 patrons, creating an intimate atmosphere where every seat feels surprisingly close to the action. I purchased our tickets rather late, so we ended up in the last row of the mezzanine. Fortunately, the theater's thoughtful design meant we still had an excellent view of the stage. We could clearly see the actors' expressions, and their powerful vocals carried beautifully throughout the venue. The theater also offers an on-site concession counter with a selection of beverages, cocktails, and snacks. Although I didn't take advantage of it, I liked the option to preorder drinks for intermission and appreciated that beverages are permitted inside the theater during the performance. The production itself was outstanding. The set design, costumes, and musical performances were all beautifully executed. The talented cast delivered exceptional performances, supported by a small orchestra tucked into the pit that added richness and energy to the entire production. The entrance to the Roberts Mainstage is located off the rear parking lot, just a short walk from the parking area. There are a few outdoor tables and chairs, making it a pleasant place to relax before the show. Inside, the lobby is bright, welcoming, and well maintained, although it is relatively compact and can become crowded before sold-out performances and during intermission. The theater is accessible, with elevators and designated wheelchair seating. However, navigating the lobby during busy times could be challenging, so arriving a little early may make for a more relaxed experience. We attended a weekday matinee and had a wonderful afternoon. Between the quality of the production, the intimate setting, and the welcoming atmosphere, I can certainly see why Olney Theatre has earned such a loyal following. I look forward to returning for many of their upcoming performances throughout the year.

Came here to see the musical - A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder…read more On the day we visited, the theater was showing 2 different performances at the same time (different shows and different rooms). I made sure to get there early. They do have a lobby area with a few seats located near Roberts Mainstage. There is also an area where you can purchase snacks and drinks - I did not check to see what they had specifically as we had eaten elsewhere before the show. The tickets show a QR code and as we entered the theater, someone scanned our tickets. As we entered, I saw there were ushers available to guide us to our seats - so helpful. We sat in the Orchestra section and the seats were amazing. I liked that we were able to see the musicians play in front of the stage - at times they were part of the show as well (so cool). The musical was great. As each person sang, I heard their words clearly. It was a great performance overall and the local actors were excellent. Can't wait to go back to see another show in this theater.

View from the seats gave very intimate. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. They do sell select drinks and snacks at this venue. Beers, wines, chips and etc. They accept tap pay and card. Found handicap parking immediately outside on the street. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, the refreshments were well priced. And the show itself was just INCREDIBLE! So much talent and amazing staging. Would see it again in a heartbeat! My one complaint would be the elevators in the building. I get it - these were added to make a historic inaccessible building much more accessible, and that's wonderful. But having two handicap people with our party, those elevators were SLOW and slightly terrifying. I worried we might get stuck at one point, haha. Otherwise, the evening was amazing!

I was looking for an art studio in the area for my 7 year old daughter and came across the…read moreChesapeake Arts Center. Class booking is done online. I found a Kids Paint Workshop and even though I was unsure of what to expect, I booked it and showed up with my girl. I am beyond excited that this center exists near me! Staff informed me it's an old school that was turned into this multi use art center. There were multiple classes going on, dance, art, etc. The attended workshop was such a pleasant surprise. It was affordable and my kids really enjoyed it and completed a real piece of art to display in our home! The instructor was professional, friendly, and patient with the children. Even though my son did not meet the age requirement, she still allowed him to participate (I paid and stayed to assist him). Afterwards, we were able to walk through the 2 free Art Exhibits on display which boasted beautiful work that was also for sale. My kids were so intrigued. They were amazed with the materials that were used & interested, asking questions and commenting on the visuals. I truly appreciate this center exposing children to the arts at a level they can comprehend. Don't hesitate to book a class or check out an exhibit! You will not be disappointed!

There was an old musky smell that permeated all throughout as if the building hadn't opened in a while. Other than that it appeared clean and the seats appeared to be new. The rest rooms are located in the front of the building as soon as you enter, one on either side. There is a nice size lobby, the comedians were selling T-shirts, CD's, and odds and ends. I did not see a concession stand.

This is such a cool, and historic theatre and I highly recommend supporting them since locally-owned theatres are such a dying breed. The perfect evening to me consists of ordering a sangria at Tapas Teatro to enjoy inside the theatre alongside some popcorn from the concession stand. Speaking of the concession stand, I ordered two popcorns and two drinks and it was just under $25. Not bad! I will be back for sure.

It has deep warm vibes from the lobby to the theaters, and friendly likable staff. We got there a little early, so, after we chose our seats and bought our tickets, we got some coffee at the wide refreshment stand, and sat a while in comfortable chairs in the lobby, below some sort of balcony, soaking in the quiet calm, looking out the windows at the mural and wall-sculpture across Charles Street. We eventually handed our tix to the attendant and sauntered down one long, clean, postered hallway, and then another offset to the right, all the way back to theater 5. The seats were old and clean, not too-worn, not too-soft, not the modern seats of modern theaters. It's like watching movies in the rec-room of friends you've known all your life,if your friend had a huge screen :-). We had center seats near the mid-front, with a bright screen that filled our vision, and a good sound system with balanced acoustics. Perfect ambiance for the new film we saw, or for one of the retro classics they often feature. There's plenty of paid on-street parking, and well as a lot and a parking building directly across one-way northbound Charles Street. There's several restaurants within easy walking distance, including one opening from the theater lobby, open after 5pm. Come back to Charles Theater for the old-school film experience you didnt know you were missing! Now that we've re-discovered it, we know we'll be regulars again!

Before the concert, there is a very knowledgeable gentleman who comes out and gives the audience some background info on the pieces and the composers. I was thrilled to see local musician Frank Zappa in the mix! Thanks, BCO, for another great concert experience!

We've been to several shows recently at The Hippodrome. In April (2026), we saw Kimberly Akimbo, a…read moremultiple-Tony-award-winning 2.5-hour musical. It's about teenage angst, and about aging, too, "akimbo" referring somewhat to an awkward posture. It's not easy to explain the story without giving a lot away. It's funny and also personal. This performance was quite good, by a national troupe on a nation-wide tour. The staging is casual-looking, the acting perfectly real, the dance and singing quite good. We came in large part for the wonderful music: a variety of jazz, folk, and rock, plus more, in a cabaret style. The Hippodrome was easy to drive to on a weekday evening, coming as we did a few blocks east of MLK on Baltimore Ave, or you could drive west from Light Street on Fayette. We love the classic vertical sign and broadway-like marquee, especially when it's glowing at night! The attached garage was super convenient, with elevators direct to the theater lobby, but note: cash isn't accepted for parking. The inside 1914 theater-space is gorgeous! Ornate walls and ceiling, and plush seats. Our seats were pretty comfortable with enough legroom. The Hippodrome presents broadway shows performed by national companies, right here in a lovely theater. In fact, we've seen three so far this year! Who needs New York :-)

I just saw the "Book of Grace" there and was truly blown away! The writing of the play was not…read moreonly brilliant but poignant full of metaphorically nuances. The acting was literally some of, if not the best I've ever seen! I say this as someone who goes to theatre several times a year. It needs to seen by everyone! I highly recommend it!!
