So I am writing this review of the rental car complex at Rome FCO airport to help out anyone who has just landed, and thought to check Yelp for what to do.
First off, as disorganized as many things are in Italy, this one is pretty darned good.
The location is excellent, as there are sky bridge walkways connecting the areas of the airport. If you are coming from Terminal 2 or 3, simply go to the top floor, where you will find clearly marked signs taking you here. It is about a 2 minute walk at most, and there are elevators to get you there if you have lots of luggage.
The complex is self-enclosed, and all of the rental car companies at the airport have counters in the one large room. There is even a little cafe in there if you need a quick jolt of espresso!
Once you have rented your car from the desk, the garages where the cars can be found are also connected, and less than a minute walk away. You go get your car, and check it out, then drive away.
To be completely clear, the cars are in a pay garage structure, so when you get your car, they will give you a little ticket to get you through the exit without paying.
A few possible issues you may have:
1) If you are coming from North America, or any other country accustomed to large cars, large parking spaces, and large parking lots, you may be a bit taken back. The garage is very tight. The lanes very narrow, the spaces as well. Navigating through the garage may feel like you are navigating a bumper car track. This is Italy, embrace it.
2) If you get the little exit ticket, know that you are on a clock. You have about 10 minutes to get out of the structure, otherwise you will need to go back and get a new ticket.
All in all, however, it is a pretty good complex, and gets the job done efficiently. read more
