Every time I come here it's so simple. I like to book in the states and I make sure I have everything in the booking before flying. I do not change any of the booking. Insurance is mandatory in Italy. If you need full coverage so that you don't have to pay the deductible of $2000 go ahead. I always decline and I drive carefully. read more

Worst experience with Hertz ever! No Gold member board, have to wait like everyone else. Customer service is terrible too.

I see lots of negative reviews of Hertz rentals at FCO, which I suspect are maybe due to either of 1) Booking without Hertz Gold membership (which is free), 2) Booking through a third-party rather than directly from Hertz using their website or app, and/or 3) Surprise charges for vehicle damage where the customer didn't protect themselves by taking thorough photos or a video of the car before leaving the rental area. I can only speak to our experience, using our Gold membership and booking through the Hertz website. We've done this about 4 times, and each time, it has been quite smooth. When we landed at FCO there was an email in my inbox with the details of the car waiting for us, including the license plate number and parking space. It's a quick walk to the car rental garage. You don't just get in and drive away; you do need to stop at the small customer service desk in the parking garage area but it's only for Gold membership and I've never encountered a line. Then present drivers license, sign contract (after politely declining extra insurance), and they hand over keys and contract, and we get in the car, drive to the exit gate where there's a quick check of the contract and ID, and you're out on the open road! As you'd expect with a major car rental agency, cars are new and clean. read more

No stars, very bad service. car is not as promised. had to wait in total of 2 hours and 3 different car

Don't rent from Hertz in Italy. Use EuropCar. Hertz has no ability to provide customer service in Italy. I wanted to extend my reservation by 2 days. US customer service said they don't have access to FCO records so I had to call the FCO Hertz office. But the don't pick up the phone! This is a known issue. There are complaints going back YEARS on Reddit. I reached out to customer service Italy and did a help ticket with the main site. I got emails asking what I needed but no other response. It's basically fraud -- you sign the contract with the expectation you will be able to contact them for help. But nope -- not possible. It's stunning Hertz operates like this. I'll never rent from them again. read more

This was the worst experience I've ever had with a car rental service. First, I waited over 40 minutes in line at their main desk, followed by additional time for processing. After that, we were sent to the garage to pick up the car. The wait there was shorter, about 15-20 minutes. We finally received the car, a Volkswagen--solid vehicle. However, as soon as I got in and tried to adjust the mirrors, one of them wouldn't move. I mentioned that it wasn't safe to drive without proper visibility, but they didn't seem too concerned, although they did try to find another car. Up until that point, despite the slow service, it wasn't a terrible experience, and the staff had been friendly. Things took a turn for the worse when the manager got involved. There were no equivalent replacements available, so we reluctantly settled for the car since we could still see well enough. When I went to get in the car, I noticed a puddle of water beneath it. I pointed it out, but they insisted it was just condensation from the air conditioning. I was skeptical because the puddle wasn't small, but I was dismissed. Frustrated, I left and hoped for the best. After 20 minutes of driving, the engine light came on, and I had to turn around and return to the airport, all while being on hold with their customer service, which was pointless since no one answered. By the time we got back to the airport, they gave us a Fiat 500 as a replacement, claiming it was in the same class. That car was awful--unstable, light, and difficult to drive. While the staff was still trying to be helpful, the real issue was with the manager, who demonstrated terrible customer service. He avoided speaking to us and, after we returned the car with the coolant leak, had the audacity to suggest that if we wanted a better car, we could pay an extra €10 a day for an upgrade. I was speechless. Exhausted from a long flight, I didn't have the energy to deal with any more nonsense. Ironically, the Fiat also had issues--the alignment was off, and it constantly veered to one side, making highway driving tiring and uncomfortable. In short, terrible customer service (mainly from the manager, though the other staff tried to help and were nice), unreliable cars, and an overall miserable experience. I highly recommend avoiding this company--and, by the way, Dollar and Hertz are under the same umbrella, so steer clear of them too! read more

Fiumicino, Italy Airport location Horrible first impression, the gal at the desk was using her cell phone and texting versus helping customers waiting in line. No sense of urgency or efficiency here, corporate Hertz should pay a visit to see how this operation is being run. I would not consider the service friendly or helpful. You pull a number and wait for your number to be called, we got someone who was SLOW as molasses, took forever to draw up paperwork for a pre reserved car which they did not have what we reserved. Once we got to the parking garage and arrived to the space, yet a different car was parked in the space, they could not find our assigned car for over for several minutes once we were in the lot, finally we flagged an employee down who found it and pulled it up for us. The rental process from beginning of counter to pick up of car was about one hour, I noticed other counters of competitors were running more efficiently and getting people in and out. Our return was somewhat smoother, I found great car return instructions posted from a google search on the internet, invaluable! (I took screen shots of return instructions, pics attached to this review). When we completed our return, we specifically asked for a White Rome City Cab, they eagerly offered to call for a cab to take us into the city, but they called a white private unmarked car (higher charge) instead. Not as we requested nor very ethical! The rental car was clean, new, had a tail light out but other than that we were safe hence the bump up to two stars. read more

DOCUMENT ALL EXISTING DAMAGE BEFORE LEAVING WITH VEHICLE! With great hesitation after reading the bad reviews of all car rentals at FCO, we reserved a Jeep Renegade hybrid through AAA (insurance with Allianz) for a 6-day Tuscan road trip. With a bit of difficulty we finally found the Hertz counter. Can't say I fully understood everything that I was told, but signed a document or two, and checked in with credit card. He tried to sell insurance to us, but I showed him my Allianz documentation for $75k worth of damage that I got thru AAA, and eventually we were off to search for the Hertz garage. We waited several minutes at the garage counter even though 2 agents were sitting there with no customers. We showed our contract and was given keys without any real additional info. After loading our suitcases, I walked around the vehicle to inspect it and took photos of every square inch, most notably of a good-sized dent and scrapes on the rear passenger fender. At our hotel hours later, after restarting my phone numerous times to get service, an email from the Hertz office appeared with a "Vehicle Condition Report" form stating that the vehicle "has been thoroughly checked for any signs of damage" and that "this form highlights any existing damage". The form indicated NO damage to the vehicle on its vehicle graphic, nor in the box for writing of damage. The second page of the form had 6 close-up photos of the vehicle (3 of the front end, 3 of the rear hatch; none of the sides) that were taken sometime in the past (not from the parking spot where we picked it up). But CONVENIENTLY, the fender with the dent was cropped out. The form went on to say to report any damage "to the Hertz team before your rental period commences"....this would have been good to know WHEN I WAS GIVEN THE KEYS!!! I was not given this form at the time during my interaction with any of the Hertz agents, nor was it mentioned I'd be receiving such a form. I immediately replied to the email disputing the Report and attaching my photos of the existing damage, asking for a response before I continued further on the road trip. I cc'd both AAA and Allianz Insurance. I never heard back from Hertz, but received responses from both AAA and Allianz. The next morning I called Allianz, but since there was essentially no claim filed by Hertz, there was nothing to do. We felt we did our due diligence, so with a bad taste in our mouths, we proceeded with our road trip. Upon the car's return, the Hertz garage agent checking us in was super friendly and spoke great English. He asked us how things went, and I told him the whole scenario about the damage, showing him my photos. He noted the date and time stamp on them, and said all was good and that there was no reason for us to worry about this. Whew!!! It's now been several months, but no word from Hertz about the damage, but have read that it can take up to a year for them to claim damage, toll or parking violations, so we'll see. A couple months ago we did receive a vague email from FCO Hertz that we had received a ticket, but no info as to what it was for, nor any amount. I then received notice from my bank that Hertz had tried to charge my credit card $35, but it was declined due to the card having expired. read more

Do what you can to avoid. Truly awful service. Painfully slow line to pick up my booked vehicle. I grabbed a waiting ticket and was the next person to be called after over an hour of waiting. They then let others get service from the window without any ticket. I went up to the window and they told me I need a place holder ticket while the others didn't. Meanwhile the line didn't have one person go thru in 20 minutes. read more

We decided to go with Hertz beings it's a well known rental car agency. It's unfortunate that we ended up having to wait three hours to see an agent for a reservation that was already booked. Plan to spend a lot of your vacation in the airport waiting to pick up your rental car. read more

If you're not a gold member, you're in trouble. We waited and hour and 45 mins at the counter before we could talk to line was epic, you know they expect that since they have a machine giving out numbers to be called. He alone kept this from being a one star experience. read more

You will wait close to three hours everytime you rent here. My problem isnt with Hertz but it is with this poorly run location. After a 13 hour flight had to wait 3 hours for a car they rented to me damaged and didnt note it. On my second rental a week later, when it was obvious there was again a three hour wait, I left, unable to cancel my reservation because web site was down for maintenance and got charged for the rental anyways.... Terrible.... YOU WILL BE MADE TO WAIT 3 HOURS AND IF YOU DON'T, YOU WILL BE CHARGED IF YOU GO ELSEWHERE!!!! Go to Avis next door, you wont have to wait.... read more

A very trying experience. First, the desk was very far from our terminal and with lots of luggage, we had to surrender our cart to leave the first terminal. As we approached T3, where the signs said it was located, we found an abandoned cart which was good to end our duffel bag drag. But it is still much further on. And not in T3, just before that. Anywho, upon arrival there was no line except one guy. He turned to me and said, "This is going to take forever". I figured, what's the big deal, then I started to wonder about all the zombie like people sitting around. Turns out you have to take a number (unless you are Hertz Gold and then you can go right to your car). So it was on 40 when I pulled the 65 ticket an hour ago. It is now on 50 as I finish this. DO NOT RENT HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE SIGNED UP FOR HERTZ GOLD. The line is merciless. read more

Hertz - Hurry up and wait. - Car Rental Near Me - Fiumicino, RM

Just returned the car at the airport in Rome. I am a gold member that rent Hertz throughout the world and the US. After returning the car in Rome and after the person at Hertz return desk checked the car next to me, I was told that everything is fine and received a receipt that acknowledged the total price which was the same as the original agreed contract amount. 30 minutes thereafter I received an email claiming that a damage is recorded and that something was damaged/missing at the trunk. The is an old trick that is happening in Rome and Hertz allows it. I am canceling my gold membership if this thing is not resolved. A company that allows these thing to happen will not support my when real thing might occur. My advise NEVER rent Hertz in Italy. Consider whether to use somewhere else. read more

Advertising works, as I still instinctively think Hertz is a premium product... not in the least. First of all, if they have a reservation that says, "Get this exact model!", wouldn't you think that you're guaranteed that exact car? Reserved an A5 sportback, and when I show up, not even an apology, "Nope, we don't have that car." Reserved for months... well what's the point of saying you're reserving that model!?!? And then offered an A5 convertible... in the middle of winter. Completely unbelievable. Then they charge 200 euros extra for adding a spouse driver, even though it's free as a Gold member. "Oh they'll take it off at the end of the rental..." Ha, of course that's a complete lie. Definitely not worth paying a premium price for the worst possible service. read more

I have been a frequent customer at Hertz for several years, both private and in my profession. After this rental, me, nor my seven friends, will ever rent a car with Hertz again. This is due to the service, and lack of information provided by Hertz when we had a flat tire. We had chosen the super cover insurance, and got the information that we should not have to pay for any damages. When we got the flat tire, we called the number on the key, the person let us know that someone would come and exchange the flat tire, and afterwards we could exchange the car at the closest Hertz location. This went smoothly, but when returning the car at Rome airport, we had to pay fr the road assistance. This was not communicated to us during the call, and we though it was out of insurance purposes we had to call that number. The person behind the desk said it was bad of them not to inform us about it, but we still had to pay. I got really disappointed and we all, eight people, have decided to never rent with Hertz again, because it was very badly handelled. read more

If I could assign zero stars, I would. We are gold members, but since we didn't make the reservation with the gold membership number, we had to go to the main desk in the terminal. Okay, we thought. Then we get there, and it's a CLUSTER. Over 2 hours' wait for a pre-existing reservation, when we could have walked straight to the car if the reservation were made with the membership. No way to change it no attempt to help from the desk person. Attempts to call for support were unanswered. This is ridiculous all around. read more

First I am disappointed that I have to give them a 1 star rating as I feel this is far to much for this hertz location. Rental desk process was fine, no problems. Picking up car from garage also fine. Dropping car back, again fine, full tank of gas, no scratches or dents, no problems with the car when it was returned. Fast forward 2 months and this location has decided to charge my credit card 7 times for a total of $280, 6 times in one day alone, not a single email to explain what they are playing at, no receipts either. Crooks operator like this, beware and dispute the charges from this dishonest business, I had read some other reviews about this location doing this kind of thing, thought it was just a disgruntled customer, now I am also a disgruntled customer. read more

Our Rome airport car rental was part of a package deal paid for in September of 2017 for a March 7th 2018 arrival in Rome. You would think they would be expecting us.... After the LONG walk to the rental counter, we take a number (second in line). Three people with Hertz vests behind the counter but only one helping the growing line. After an hour of waiting our turn as the ONE customer service person kept leaving (on break or what?). We asked the other two why they weren't working, got 'the look' and were ignored. If it hadn't been part of the package, and obviously all those waiting had a similar 'deal' as we were being held captive, I would have gone to another rental agency. FINALLY got our rental papers in order to go down to pick up our car, again second in line, and who's there to take care of this? the same (only) person from upstairs!! Another 40 minutes wait because they were washing the car.... seriously? It's raining out!! The car was nice for budget sans navigation but thank God for SIRI. HERTZ you need to check up on your Rome customer service counter. It was like going to California's DMV for the day.... read more

Good luck finding Hertz at Fiumicino. The Hertz sign is about the size of a credit card, and unless you have someone riding shotgun, who has excellent vision, you'll find yourself driving around the airport several times until you decide to follow the signs to Avis, hoping that they can direct you to Hertz! When you do locate the turnoff for Hertz, you are then directed into a five story parking structure. There are no signs indicating on which floor Hertz is located. So, you drive up until finally, on the fifth floor you see a Hertz sign. But, there are no Hertz personnel to guide you to the drop off or assist you in any way in returning THEIR vehicle. I parked and walked over to the office and identified myself as a Gold Card Member. Except for two English speaking employees, the office was empty. Nevertheless, the employees refused to help me, telling me to go back out to the car. I complied but when no one appeared, I looked at the two office workers in their little office and gestured complete and utter frustration. Finally, one of them got up, came out, examined the gas gauge and gave me a receipt for the car. Before departing, I asked how to get to the walk way that would take me to the airport Hilton, located directly across the street. Both employees told me to go town to the main floor and take a bus six or seven stops. When I said that I meant the Hilton across the street, they insisted that was the best way to get to the airport Hilton. Well, it was a good thing that both elevators were out of order or I would still be on that bus! Instead I walked into the terminal and followed a Hilton sign, marked "Comfort,' which took me to a walk way overpass that led me right to the lobby of the Hilton across the street. Hertz are the WORST offenders when it comes to devious (and inconsistent) small print. They will squeeze every penny they can out of you. It's impossible to get them to reply in a timely manner. We rented our Hertz car in Salerno and returned it to Leonardo Da Vinci in May 2016. Took the North circle down A 90 ( after staying in Tivoli for the night, about 50 minutes away). Took north circle route because of less traffic than the south and easier access to gas ( la Pisana) right off the freeway only about 15 km away from Hertz drop off. Got the gas guy to fill right to the top ( he stuck his finger in to show me). The Hertz drop off is now on Level 1 , in the Arrival Comfort Parking lot ( P with a hat). Lots of Hertz signs now. Very easy. Drive up one level and it is right off the ramp. read more

I was very nervous to rent our car at the Rome Airport due to the numerous (and mostly) bad reviews. So, I wanted to post our experience to help others who are in the same boat. We picked up our car from the Rome airport on 9/15. I'll admit, it's tricky to get from the terminal into the Hertz rental area and ultimately to the car canopy, which is a ways from the rental counter. Do yourself a favor and sign up for a Hertz gold member account before booking. It'll save you tons of time because you can go directly to the canopy this way. Still a short wait at the canopy but not bad. If you get lost on your way, ask for help. Everyone was very nice. The car was exactly the type we reserved and Hertz agent was very helpful and kind. There was some damage on the car so I did my due diligence and took lots of pictures and noted damages. The car was priceless for our trip up to the Tuscan countryside. We dropped the car in Florence and again, a very easy (albeit different than the states) experience and they charged me EXACTLY what the rental agreement stated. For those dropping off at Florence airport, there is a service area immediately when getting off the A1 and it has a gas station to fill up, 2 miles from the airport. We had an extremely pleasant experience overall. I know many have had bad experiences but I also tend to think that people are more quick to review bad service than good, so wanted to add something to the mix. read more

Do not rent from Hertz Italia. I received two alleged parking violation notices in April 2015 for a rental in Italy 2014. Each of the violations (which I did not receive receipts) were forn$45.90 each. I just received a notice (February 23, 2016) from the Gaeta Italy police dept. that the tickets have not been paid. After numerous transfers within the Hertz system, I was informed that the $45.90 charged for each ticket were Hertz Administration fees, not payment for the tickets themselves. So now my late fees have doubled the original ticket fine ($40 USD) to over $80 each. The Hertz admin fees were more than the ticket. ABSURD!!! read more
