We ran into many hurdles while trying to choose a schedule that fit my 90-year-old Dad's needs, both the owner and the scheduler are much more concerned about what is convenient for them than they are about helping families under extreme stress. Caregivers are hit or miss -- a few are outstanding, some are acceptable, and one worked on her college paper the entire time she was looking after my dad. I was referred to Rent a Daughter from a friend to assist my mother who recently had surgery. She needed 24 hour around the clock care and we had a number of the care givers from Rent a Daughter throughout the week. Every one of them was friendly, caring and competent. They assisted my mom with everything she needed to keep her clean and comfortable. It's been over a week now and we will continue to have them assist her for now. I really had good feelings about this company and the owner as I began to explore getting some help for my elder mother. The website was nicely done with positive comments by community members. The owner showed up for a brief visit/seemed to be in a hurry. She got a sense of what we wanted the aide to do and was positive, enthusiastic, supportive; it all looked and sounded good. Note that the website is listed is a dot org...which leads one to expect a place is NON-profit...and while not illegal, it is misleading when this is definitely a for-profit company. I was led to believe that all of her staff were STNA's or nurses, unless I misheard her. I asked if BCI checks were done on the people. She responded she could "run one". She had also indicated service could start a week earlier, which was fine with me, then contacted me a day or two prior acting as if she wasn't clear on that...but that wasn't the case possibly due to her not having the BCI check back. I learned (from a local news story) that when you are dealing with a PRIVATE company there is NO REQUIREMENT to do a background check. Truly a buyer beware situation. The following week we planned on the owner bringing the aide to our home to meet. The aide and mother were getting along chatting while the owner met with me in another room. She flashed on her iphone a picture of a "certificate of achievement" which is NOT the same as an STNA certificate which can be verified (by name alone) on the State Nursing Board website. She eventually told me that the aide was a home health aide. She also revealed the BCI did show something...a situation where the aide took the rap for her sister when an apartment they were renting was trashed and was sentenced to a fine and community service. I was trying to be tolerant and understanding but was concerned about the circumstances and was beginning to get a bad feeling about this operation and the quality of personnel hired. Overnight I requested, and received the last name of the aide. By sheer chance I came to discover that the aide had approximately 9 or 10 traffic related offenses, many repeat, in one local court system alone. Things like speeding, not wearing a seat belt etc. When I let the owner know what I had discovered she did not mention anything about it in her email response....not that she knew, or did not know, or any apology. Only that we must be comfortable with whomever was in our home. That we could get another aide arranged if this one was not a "good match". I never received a callback, so I called the owner. In the end I asked if SHE would be comfortable knowing my mother was in a car with someone who had that many offenses. She must have thought I was pretty stupid by suggesting that it was not the aide's car! But clearly it was the aide who was cited for speeding and seat belt issues! She was comfortable with my mother being in the car with her. I also learned the employees were independent contractors, and that it was the company's insurance that would cover if there were an accident. I find it very hard to believe an insurance company would want to insure knowing that people with such lengthy records related to driving issues were involved. I let the owner know that my own standards were much higher than hers and I would need to take my business elsewhere. I am now considering other agencies where the aides are employees. And I am motivated to see if we can't change the law to require background checks of ALL in-home care providers. read more
