Joy does NOT have the ability to do your work for you and lastly Joy does NOT by any means sell herself short on the services that she provides. Joy, you are an absolute god send. Seriously.... I have been thru various counseling all of my life but that didn't resolve my issues nor did it really give me the tools needed to actually resolve them. So since I had tried that previously and pretty much got the same result, I knew I had to try something different. So, what did I do? I went to my trusty yelp and reached out and received several responses. I had a few phone interviews because I needed to find the right person to help me thru some heavy stuff. I liked Joy right off the bat. You can simply tell by the tone in her voice that she is an angel. I signed up for 6 sessions with Joy...and after my 6th session, I signed up for 6 more. And I threw Joy some crazy challenges (nothing in my life has EVER been easy)....there were issues that she flat out told me she couldn't do anything about (I appreciate the honestly more than you know) and there were some issues where I really feel like I challenged her but guess what? SHE NEVER GAVE UP ON ME. SHE NEVER TOLD ME SHE COULDN'T WITHOUT AN EXPLANATION (again she doesn't have a magic wand). Instead what I received was far far greater than any gift...Joy gave me the tools I needed to see where my deficiencies came from and also gave me some positive insight as to how to fix the behaviors and this is something I now work on EVERY SINGLE DAY and it's made me a better person. So if you feel like you are stuck, and don't know where to go, and you have tried traditional methods (and they haven't really worked) I would seriously urge you to give Joy a call...set up and appointment and more importantly work on your (O&*%(Q*&)%(. He was waiting in the hallway and started pounding on the wall, and she insisted on dragging him out of the building and threatening him to stop which terrified him. We have reported Susan's behavior to our regular therapist who informed us that they are aware of similiar experiences happening with other children in her care. Please do not take your child to work with her as she does not truly seem to understand children with anxiety.

AKUA has multiple facilities across the state of California. The Terra Loma facility in Sac County is an all men's facility aimed towards first responders with the most amazing, kind, and knowledgeable team including a full medical staff of nurses and therapists. The person I know that is currently here is nearing completion of their 30 days in-house, and AKUA has helped them to set up a continued care virtual program for 5-hours a day after release. I cannot recommend this place enough! Most importantly it's where the addict of my story wanted to go as I seek Al-Anon treatment and counseling on my own. Drop off was the most beautiful moment... between the addicts decision to seek help, and the serenity felt upon arrival I knew we'd picked the right place. Thank you, AKUA. Keep up the great work!

Not the right environment for me…read more I went to AKUA hoping for a safe, supportive environment where I could focus on my recovery. Unfortunately, my experience was very different from what I expected. One of my biggest concerns was the sleeping situation. Because I had a seizure at the beginning of my recovery in 2022 I was placed on a box spring and mattress on the floor. I understand the need to take safety precautions, but the setup was uncomfortable and made it difficult to get the quality sleep I needed. I also had significant issues with my roommate and the sleeping environment. I normally use a fan and white noise to sleep, but my roommate was uncomfortable with the fan, white noise, and an open window. I tried to find compromises, including ordering earplugs. Instead of feeling like I had a reasonable, comfortable place to recover, I felt like I was constantly trying to meet everyone else's needs while getting very little sleep myself. I was told that moving me upstairs to a different room was going to happen, but by the time that was finally being discussed, I had already reached the point where I decided I needed to leave. I also had concerns about how basic personal-care items were handled. Some things felt unnecessarily restrictive, and it was frustrating to have to explain why ordinary items were needed. To be fair, there were staff members who were kind and supportive, and when I experienced a panic attack while waiting for discharge, a staff member took the time to walk with me and help me calm down. I appreciated that. Ultimately, though, the overall environment wasn't a good fit for me. Recovery is difficult enough without feeling exhausted, uncomfortable, and unable to get adequate sleep. I left AKUA and returned home rather than continuing in an environment that I felt was making things harder for me. I'm sharing this because people considering treatment deserve to know that the experience can vary greatly from what is presented in the promotional material. I would encourage anyone considering AKUA to ask very specific questions about sleeping arrangements, roommate situations, personal belongings, personal care items, and what happens if the living arrangement isn't working for you. I lasted 5 nights and on my 6th morning I was over it. I can do better at home and sleep in a real bed in my real home. I never even talked to a counselor or a doctor during my 5-day stay.
