Just as the name translates to "freshly caught", everything tasted simply fresh and local. We got the Nordic snack, fish soup, salmon burger, and salmon with potatoes, mushrooms and peas - everything was tasty. The soup that we started with was so flavorful and bold, with the skewered shrimp perfectly cooked. Incredibly generous portions. Very cozy, relaxed atmosphere with candles lit and quite full for 7p on a Tuesday. They also have a stand across the street by the water, featuring fish and chips plus fischbrotchen, bier and vino. It is a nice addition, people can eat by the water and relax.

But here, I saw bird fly around in the distance but none came near so I felt safe to sit outside. These potatoes are humongous and it could probably be shared by two as a light lunch. If you're really hungry and you can handle a large portion, give it a go! But let's just say for us, we ate around 1:30 pm and felt full the entire day. We kind of forced ourselves to eat around 9:30 pm for dinner these Aperol drinks are yummy! Refreshing! Staff spoke English and was pretty cool bunch! I expected more for the price. The service was very attentive, but almost to a fault. Every couple minutes we were interrupted. We sat upstairs, where there are four small tables crowded together in a tiny space. All the tables were occupied and we felt very observed, aware that everyone in the tiny room could hear our every word. It was uncomfortable. Our evening ended on a particularly sour note when we asked for the check and handed over our gift certificate. A few minutes later, we were smugly informed that the gift certificate -- which we received during COVID and did not include an expiration date -- had expired and the restaurant refused to accept it. Ugh. Needless to say, we will not be going back to Schlumachers.

The food is yummy - north German, the Bier is great, portions are good, the ambiance is very Old World and take all the time you want to eat. The outside seating in the summer is nice. We ordered a traditional German dish with potatoes with cheese egg and bacon, and a turkey schnitzel with croquettes. The service was excellent and beer good and simple, they only had one choice! But it can be mixed with a variety of juices or sodas for other options. The place was packed with plenty of Germans, so that has to be a good sign as well.

When I visit a town in Germany I've not visited before, I often try the 'Ratskeller' -- literally,…read morethe cellar of the town hall -- where there's nearly always (always?) a restaurant. For one thing, it's right in the town center, convenient to the town's sightseeing spots. But I've found most towns' Ratskellers are usually pretty good -- maybe not the finest restaurant in town, but definitely not the worst, and always full of local people. The Ratskeller in Luebeck is no exception. Service was welcoming and cordial (for German standards) -- food was typical for the region and quite nice. We had herring in the 'housewife's style' (served chilled with onions & sour cream), and steamed cod. Both were high quality fish, nicely prepared. Just add beer and you've got a great lunch.
Oh from where should I start? To be fair, nothing against…read morethe food, it tasted ok, with the exception of my daughter whose words concerning her curry sausage were: Ewww disgusting! Unfortunately nobody understood it since it was said in Swedish. But most of my complaints are related to the staff's attitude and lack of customer relation skills. Firstly, my little boy was hungry so I started breastfeeding him, and one of the waitresses wondered if I wanted to leave the table and go to somewhere more private. I said "no thanks we are just fine here". And I could see her judgmental look but couldn't care any less. Secondly, they brought wrong beverages, and then it took a longer while to bring the right ones. Thirdly, and that takes the prize, after breastfeeding we gave our little boy some potato bits, and his high chair and floor around it got a little bit messy. Immediately a waitress came with dustpan and brush and said : here for you to clean up this mess. I was startled , paralyzed... I couldn't react at that mo... I never imagined someone would actually do this! And if she had asked nicely instead , but she was freaking rude! Fourthly, the manager!!!!!! Oh the manager! I swept the floor, and the high chair , and left the dustpan and brush on the table. And then the manager comes and gets pissed off at me for leaving the stuff on the table... and at her staff too... and then on our way out she kept asking if we were ready to leave and take the elevator (because of the pram). And I said with a polite but dry tone in German (yeah I speak the language) "actually not, I am waiting for my husband and daughter. And then she kept talking loudly and aggressively to one of her subordinates. And then I said "ok we are good to go" and sarcastically in German with a over jolly voice "Have a lovely weekend". So summarizing it, it could have been a good experience, but the bad service and attitude screwed up everything. And the food was not more than okay. But at least I cannot deny it was a memorable afternoon and actually hilarious!
