My boyfriend and I went over to the flash sheets and within ten/fifteen minutes, we were both getting tattoos. He was tattooed by Jimmy and I was tattooed by Mia. It was pretty cool because their areas were across from each other so we all got to chit chat together while getting our pieces. Both artists took their time even with our smaller pieces. It didn't seem like I was taken seriously when I walked into a few spots. I had one place tell me to walk in on a different day, and that I would be worked in without an appointment. One place didn't make me feel desired as a client at all. I guess an older guy looking for a sports themed logo isn't exciting to them. A couple went for a really dark feel to their store, and some were just not friendly. Poisoned Pen was different from those spots in every way. First off this place is well lit and spotless. You don't think of getting a tattoo as a medical process, but it should be treated as such. Second, I was treated as a valued person. Not a client. I felt like everyone I encountered there was friendly, from the front counter to the artists, to the clients. Everyone there was supportive and encouraging to someone getting their first tattoo. My questions which were treated with indifference elsewhere were welcomed here. I was matched up with Jordy B as my artist. I was looking for a Bengals logo, and she worked up exactly what I wanted from the image I provided. The placement was on my calf, so she explained the pluses and minuses of working in that location. I was able to rest easily on the table while she got to work. She was fine talking or letting me relax listening to music on my airpods. Was it painful getting a tattoo? I don't think pain is the right word. It felt like some leg hairs were being pulled out, and every now and then I had the sensation of a razor on my skin. Other than that, it wasn't bad at all. I think my experience may have been easier due to the artist's skill. The Bengals face logo took about an hour and a half tops to finish up a 3 color tattoo. Afterwards they placed a Saniderm barrier on my tattoo to ensure proper healing. After 24 hours the rules stated I had to get a new barrier with clean up (some bleeding did happen) to keep healing well. The problem is that I had a busy Saturday scheduled. I was met before opening time to get this process completed to work around MY schedule. How often do you get a professional service that works around you? I can't recommend this place more. If you are getting your first tattoo, you won't find better treatment. Their talented artists and repeat clients show that this is a place for experienced clients as well. Clean, friendly, and professional all feel like I'm underselling.

So it's pretty awesome that when Scott finally opened his own shop, Goldenrod Tattoo, Erin joined him. Scott definitely has an old school style, but he's done a good variety of other styles for some of my tattoos. I've always been able to go to him with an idea, and he will draw up something amazing. The vibe of this shop is really great. The tattooing booths are huge and everyone there is super friendly. If you want a tattoo, this is easily the only place I'd recommend. I can't wait to go for my next tattoo!

He also does a number of art pieces and commissions. (I commissioned a specific thing for my husband a number of years ago.) Scott's shop also has a $60 tattoo called "you get what you get." For $60 you get to turn the gumball machine, what you get is what you get tattooed. I did this when Scott was at another shop and I got a cowgirl that I affectionately call "big Debra" as opposed to little Debbie. The best part is you can either have a custom piece done or you can pick some stuff off the wall. Either way, you are going to end up with a great piece of art!
