That thought lasted all of 5 hours because as soon as I passed Nossi-Be, I backpedaled to take another look. From the glass window, I saw a display case of at least 30 flavors of ice cream. So then I told myself that unless they had turron de Jijona ice cream (my favorite flavor, which I have never seen outside of Spain), I was "just looking". But can I ever "just look"? In addition to turron de Jijona ice cream, Nossi-Be had some of the most creative, original, and surprisingly delicious flavors that I have ever seen in an ice cream shop. Have you ever tried kalimotxo [1] ice cream? Smoked salmon? Or how about bacalao al pil pil [2] ice cream? The woman at the ice cream counter began to get impatient with me as I tasted spoonful after spoonful of the bacalao (it's really good, trust me!), chipirones en su tinta (squid in ink), and foie gras flavors. Although I am a fan of the sweet-savory flavor combination, I had already promised myself a turron ice cream. And because I couldn't resist how dark the chocolate with marcona almonds looked (or tasted), I ordered a scoop of that as well. So much for that wearing a bikini thing. Given my perpetual state of weak willpower and/or my superfluous boy troubles, I've eaten a lot of ice cream. And this was by far the best ice cream I've had in Spain (or ever, for that matter). The chocolate with marcona almonds was just packed with almonds and bittersweet, yet creamy dark chocolate. The turron flavor was as though I had just bitten into a piece of turron de Jijona. There was so much honey, something most turron ice cream usually lacks. It wasn't sugary the way most ice cream can be; all of the sweetness was naturally derived from the ingredients used. This was definitely an expensive treat (just under 5 euro), but completely worth it. The nice thing about Nossi-Be is that it's not simply an ice cream stand, like some of the places in Casco Viejo. Grab a seat and enjoy, rather than having your ice cream on the run. I had to try it. I went to get a small cone and I was given one tasting before choosing. I was also told that even the small cone allows for two flavors to be blended together...so I chose strawberry and Tutti Frutti. Both were delicious and refreshing. It was hard to lick the entire ice cream cone without dripping it on me, but it was a great challenge. There are dozens of Regma stands all over the city, so you will be able to try these great tasting ice creams from any corner of Santander.

It was a really big piece and tasted like strawberry ice cream. In other words, it was delicious! The place seems to be a bakery at one end and at the other was fruit that seemed to be used to make smoothies. Lots of tables and booths but the place was crowded. There was a really nice feel to the place and with a damn fine cup of coffee and free wifi as well; it's a place worth returning to.

When I'm in "beach bum" mode, I typically like to buy a fresh loaf of bread from a bakery, buy some sliced charcuterie or embutidos and a little bit of cheese from a butcher shop, and make my own sandwich to take on the beach for lunch. I came to La Gallofa in search of a small baguette for my sandwich. I was impressed (and also very tempted) by the large selection of freshly baked bread, which included ciabatta, pan gallego, and whole wheat loaves, but managed not to give into temptation. There are also beautifully decorated pastries, as well as some classic hojaldres [1] and palmeritas (some dipped in chocolate!) pastries as well. Judging by the number of people purchasing hojaldres, I'd guess that these are what the bakery does best. If you don't have a sweet tooth (shame on you!), there are also empanadillas and quiche slices available. The bread was perfect for my sandwich with jamon serrano. I loved the light, airy consistency with uneven bubbles and crusty exterior. From location to location, La Gallofa excels in offering baked goods of consistent quality. [1] A popular, flaky pastry.
