As a child, torrone was always one of my favorite Christmas sweets. I would eat it until I was so hyper from all of the sugar and couldn't fit another piece into my stomach. I used to get so excited whenever my dad would bring a box home from one of the stores in the neighborhood that specialized in Italian products. It was always one basic kind: a white, soft, chewy nougat with almonds. On my first trip to Spain, I was amazed at how many different types of turron there are - chocolate, yema tostada, and even with coconut, just to name a few. Even better, it didn't have to be Christmas to satisfy my love for turron: the Jijona variety (a very soft turron, basically made from ground-up almonds and honey) is available year-round as an ice cream flavor! La Polar makes turron ice cream just the way I love it - with little bits of the turron itself in the ice cream. It provides such great texture and little bursts of honey that the regular turron ice cream lacks. The chocolate ice cream has a very rich flavor, not only because La Polar probably uses cream that has a week's serving of fat in it, but because the chocolate is very heavy on the cocoa. The service is friendly and the prices are about average for ice cream shops in Santander - around 2 euro for a regular cone. In case you aren't able to visit the La Polar storefront, they have an official ice cream truck that is usually parked in front of the entrance of Playa de Los Peligros.
