The Caxton Arms serves the best steak and ale pie I have ever had, and I've tried quite a few. Indeed, it's so good, I haven't been able to bring myself to try anything else, although a dining companion liked the lamb burger that he had. An onion-bhaji "burger" (i.e.: a few onion bhajis in place of the meat on a hamburger bun) was rated a miss. There's a spacious smoking patio out back with covered areas. Darts and other pub games are available, as well as a well-above-average selection of board games for play. Service is friendly and quick; they have superb staff at the Caxton. Indeed, in some ways I regret revealing one of Brighton's best-kept secrets, but the most recent Yelp review was a decade ago, and I feel that they deserve recognition.

Trendy, with colourful flock wallpaper, and even a pool table in the smaller bar, all make for a pub with a twist. And of course, it's not just about real ale. They do the lovely Asahi lager, Oranjeboom and the usual wine and spirits. The modest menu is popular. I pop in every now and again and the staff are always friendly. It's gets busy with an after-work crowd but often, later in the evening, it's a pleasant place for a quiet drink. There's a charming, split-level outdoors area out the back and down the stairs you'll find a sizeable function room that's useful for meetings and parties. The room has its own bar, so there isn't any need to go back upstairs. As a final aside, The Caxton is surely one of the few pubs around that has a single, glass panelled door on the gent's toilet. Your privacy isn't at risk (and let's face it, it's not as if people are peering in hoping for a thrill) but do put the old chap away before you leave the urinals!

When my friend and I got in, the whole party in this pub was just getting started at around 11:00. Although I did not eat the food there, I did enjoy the atmosphere, the drinks, and chatting with various people. They had a disc jockey playing various music that night, so it was definitely loud. I was introduced to supposedly one of the most popular English ciders, which is Strongbow. Liked the refreshing taste and the slight sweetness. I think I drank more than two pints here. I think it's a better alternative to just drinking beer all the time. We sat down on a hardwood table, but there is a place outside filled with sofas if you need a comfortable place to sit outside while fulfilling a smoking craving. Another great advantage this pub has is that it has free wi-fi, which is great if you need internet. Overall, this is a pretty good pub, one of the loudest I have been to during a Saturday night, and I had a great time hanging out with my friend and meeting a lot of really cool people. Just don't use the toilets here, it's pretty dirty, like most of pubs I've been to in England.

The pub naturally divides into separate areas, despite being essentially open plan. There is the front section with tables are chairs, the bar area, and a back section with comfy sofas and a pool table. They often have a DJ on weekend nights and the place can get really lively- nearly every time I've been on a Friday or Saturday night it's been packed and people inevitably end up dancing drunkenly about the place! Because it gets so busy, you can be waiting at the bar a while, but its a small payoff for such a great atmosphere. If it gets too hectic inside, they have a massive split-level garden, with plenty of seating and heaters. It's a great place to go if you're in a big group, because you'll usually find a seat. With great tunes, good drinks and fun people, the Sidewinder is the perfect place to go if you don't quite fancy a club, but you want to dance in to the wee hours!

The Komedia is a little scruffy around the edges, but that's Brighton for you. The building has two performance venues, an independently-run cafe bar and foyer bar (and feels much larger inside than its modest facade implies). They also provide food during some performances with a caberet-style setting. But it's the entertainment you come here for, not the surroundings. The staff seem friendly enough, although not always fantastically efficient - on-line booking isn't always available, for example. Arrive with plenty of time for comedy performances, as the best seating gets taken early on. (You can always have a drink while you wait.) If, like me, you have a large, illuminated, 'pick on me' sign on your head which only the performer can see, you'll need to tuck yourself away somewhere inconspicuous...

They provide the 'mixers' and they had a wide range of flavours and choices and you get your own 'mixologist' who makes the cocktails for you and your group. Very enjoyable night there and think this was partly due to the unusual concept (they dont need an alcohol licence - our money pays for the bar staff) and the very quirky inside. When you are standing outside you think you are looking into either an abandoned shop where they have just left a few chairs inside, or a student type place where they didnt have the money for the furniture! The wow factor comes when you go deeper inside and down narrow steps to find there are lots of little rooms with v. dim lighting, a bar in each one and a table and chairs. We were in the depths of the building which did look a bit like a dungeon! Off from our little 'cubby hole' room was another tinier room and that was a mini cinema. When I went back upstairs and then up the stairs to the first/second floor again with the wow factor as they had a bar made from a real snooker table (they had chopped it up length ways and at each corner there was still the little holes for the balls. I would recommend this place if you have a small group - no more than 10 ideally (we had 15/16 and it was a squeeze and some were unable to sit down, which was a shame. Definitely worth experiencing this place (if you can find it) atleast once!

We paid £25 for two hours - We brought spirits and we had our own cocktail barmen who mixed the drinks for us their mixers. The venue itself is very hidden, it has no sign outside and to be honest looks like an empty bar which has finished for the evening - the lights are really bright at the front! However, you go in and there are very cosy dark rooms with very elegant 1920 styled decor. It was very odd but good odd. Myself and my friend were late though - we just couldn't find the venue and were walking down around for ages. We eventually got there and we missed out on one set of drinks - wasn't a massive deal though. However, we then got another round of drinks made by the cocktail waiter and soon realised that we had, in the last hour had TWO drinks! Which we thought wasn't value for money at all - it wasn't busy really there was enough staff for them to deal with the amount of people in our party as well as the other people who were also there. One of the people in our group complained - The staff were extremely proactive and quick to apologise as a result we were moved upstairs to a different part of the venue and had a very personalised service. They also gave us more time added so we got an extra hour! This was pretty good of them to do to be honest and we were pleased to have been given this extra time. However - WE ALL GOT WRECKED! ! ! I couldn't even see straight when I was walking home. It was pretty bad - So make sure you drink lots of water through drinks - It just hit me all of a sudden and I had no control of my legs!

The pub itself is spacious, and decorated in that modern style which is fast becoming ubiquitous, of flecked carpet, dark wooden furniture and maroon walls: so not especially atmospheric or interesting, but comfortable enough (and, to be fair, all spotlessly clean - including the Gents' loos). The high point was the real ale selection: Harvey's Sussex Bitter, Hop Back's Summer Lightning, and King & Barnes Sussex Bitter, all well kept. It's quiet at week-ends, but gets busier in the evenings (and very busy for key sporting events, especially if Brighton and Hove Albion FC are playing at home, as the stadium is not far away). Service is friendly and efficient, and prices are pretty reasonable for Brighton. So, not a pub you'd go out of the way for, but fine to pop in, if you are in the area.

It does get extremely busy on football match days (I'm assuming this will change when Falmer is built) but otherwise its a very tranquil place to enjoy a well poured pint and some nice pub grub. There's a car park around the back which a lot of people don't notice, just turn immediately right past the pub and its tucked around the corner. The pub has plenty of space and large TVs for watching sport and also a nice new pool table that you can play during half time. There's a fantastic selection of real ales on the bar and one of my favourite ciders - Weston's Traditional Scrumpy. Enjoy it with their lovely bangers and mash! The Pub also offers B&B rooms above but prices vary due to the time of year and amount of people etc. I'm sure its a lot cheaper and more relaxing than staying in the center of town though. The number 5 bus goes just over the road and can drop you directly into the middle of town in no time.

I'm a stickler for a quality Sunday roast, and the Good Companions rarely disappoints. (NB: if you prefer your roasts sin niños, you may want to go elsewhere - it's loaded with them on Sunday daytime) As a local pub it's pretty idyllic - great economical food, a decent array of beer and wine, good bloody Mary's. It's got an ace beer garden out back, and plenty of room in the pub. Other reviews mention the overhaul that this pub had in 2011, but it really was outstanding. You can't tell now, but this really used to be a dive of a place. Normally when pubs get revamped they get turned into something astronomically different like a Gastropub. Thankfully in this case they just redid it as a really welcoming, kid friendly, traditional boozer. Top job.

They're undeniably delicious- cooked to perfection and topped with tasty combinations that won't fail to make your mouth water in anticipation. I had one last night, accompanied by a cranberry juice, and my opinion of the place shot right up afterward. They also have a vast outdoor seating area for the summer time, which is always a plus in Brighton as we head towards the warmer months. On the other hand there is a lot that doesn't work about this place. It's often so noisy that conversation is virtually out of the question which, for me, is an important downside. The ladies toilets are also pretty shocking (though this is lightened by the addition of chalk board doors where people can doodle until their hearts content- very clever distraction tactic!). To top it all off, the serving staff lack a certain friendliness that you get elsewhere in Brighton pubs. They're quite short and curt often, presumably because they are usually rushed off their feet, but it's not a great atmosphere because of it. So, as you can imagine, this place divides me somewhat! I'm giving it a 3 because it's a good pub in general with a few flaws but, at the end of the day, burgers that will rock your world!
