OK... this is not a five star hotel, but at $40 a night, you shouldn't expect five star amenities…read more What you do get is a clean bed, entertainment via a television, free wifi, and an experience in a hotel that easily dates back to the sixties. Getting a key is very interesting... everything is done through a tiny slot in the office, and returning the key afterwards is the same kind of thing... makes you wonder just what you are getting yourself into. However, when I got into the room, there were no issues... it was clean and livable, if a bit...eccentric... For instance, the paintings in the room are not your typical hotel paintings of fruit or whatnot... no, instead I had a print that looked French Renaissance. However...there were two paintings in the room...and they were identical! Oh, but we are not done... I went to fill a water bottle in the bathroom...only to find that both knobs on the faucet in the sink were linked to the hot water supply...warm water in my bottle! So yeah, there are some oddities, but for the price you really can't beat it.

The room was clean and air conditioned, but definitely not a luxury suite. It was exactly what we…read moreneeded for only $40 a night. Great location in Monroeville, close to historic downtown, only about a block from Harper Lee's old home and school and less than a mile from the grocery store. Also, when we checked in, the owner told us this is where Gregory Peck stayed during the filming of To Kill A Mockingbird.

It is always hard for me to review these types of motels. For work I have gotten used to the likes…read moreof Sheratons and Crown Plaza's. That being said, when I am on the road myself, I utilize hostels and cheap motels often. This one is below average to me. It was clean, I didn't see any bugs or actual dirt, and no hairs in sink. The towels and washcloths and shower curtain were so old and stained I had a hard time using them. I'm sure they were washed, but they were practically black in some spots. Also the sink, tub, and toilet were so old, they were also stained and badly cracked. I used shoes in the shower because it was impossible to tell if the tub truly was clean. But the sink and toilet were clean, just old. The sheets smelled clean but were also stained. I checked under the sheets. No signs of bedbugs or other critters though. And the bed was surprisingly comfortable. I stayed here for 3 nights. I didn't feel unsafe or dirty. The owners were so friendly and helpful. And of course the price was right. All that to say this. If you are accustomed to nice modern hotels keep driving a little ways, there are some chain hotels just on the outskirts of town. If you are used to side of the road motels this one isn't bad.
