I always enjoy going to the IFC Center to watch movies, but this was the first time I went there during a film festival. I reckon he was more from the "you didn't even know that the Angenieux lens in Jaws was an homage to George Melies?!" camp, and didn't welcome the 8-year-olds who had a day off from school. Or maybe it was his own kid, which is awful in a different way. But a 10:55 movie starting at 10:55 can be a shocker in today's AMC-ized world. You can't blame IFC for that, but they need better internal consistency on starting times. On the plus side, where they have been hiding Theater 3? I usually wind up in the broom closet-type screens but this was a good one, with beautiful sound for the John Williams score. As many conspire against the theatrical film business including the industry itself, I appreciate IFC's well-chosen stash of oldies and its quirkier newer offerings like Secret Mall Apartment. A cozy, local setting favored by filmgoers looking to catch independent, international, or curated special screenings while shopping or dining in the area." Well.. color me impressed! First off, I am a huge fan of Angelika Theater in SoHo. I have always had an enjoyable movie experience there. Well organized, spotless and an employee will announced now seating for particular film. Additionally, Angelika was a pioneer in serving coffee way back in the 90s. I also loved the Angelika Film magazine which had mini interviews of the artists in the films Angelika was showing. I had no idea Angelika took over Cinema 123. This, when I received my September perk from NY Magazine ( sigh, loving these perks!). There were 3 Angelika Cinemas I could redeem my BOGO movie ticket and free medium popcorn: SoHo, East Village and UES. My friend and I picked Heart of the Beast ( lol, non negotiable due to me being a huge Brad Pitt fan). HOTB was not playing in SoHo so we picked UES. The experience of redeeming free popcorn to the comfortable leather chair seating was outstanding. The medium popcorn was fresh and delicious! Our seats were great and I felt as if I was watching the film in my living room. The entire venue was spotless from front of house to theater to bathrooms. This..this.. this will bring me back to seeing films IRL. Shout out to all the Cinema 123 staff for being kind, courteous and professional. For now, see ya at the movies! Btw Heart of the Beast is fantastic, Brad brings it!

The staff member also went out of her way to separate the popcorn for all three of us, which we really appreciated. We ended up with great seats and an unforgettable experience. This theater is a bit hard to find -- you have to take the escalator in the big office building down two flights to find the entrance. Once you're inside, though, the theater is such a vibe: very hip, retro, with fun posters of niche films. Plus, there's a huge DVD rental library called "Kim's Video" right at the entrance, presumably named after the iconic video and music retail store, that has a bunch of movies you can borrow for FREE! You can also rent a DVD player for a small fee. The "Kim's Video" selection continues on the floor below, too, so the selection really is huge. The theater itself is nice and clean. As others have noted, the seats do recline partially, but not all the way, though they are comfortable and plush. I didn't order food, but my partner got a burger and a Modelo, both of which he enjoyed. The service was prompt and efficient, and really didn't distract from the movie at all. I also appreciated the strict no talking and no latecomers policy, since I've been in some rowdy theaters before. The commute home is incredibly easy if you take the 1, 2 or 3, which has a station in the same building (though I don't know if it runs on weekends). Only downside is the tickets are on the more expensive side -- about $24/person after fees.

Afterwards, we placed them in a fish bowl. My paper slip was never drawn, but the fishbowl did come into play a few times during the show. But I digress. I took my seat and took a quick pic of the stage before putting phones away. Our magician of the show came out shortly after. He and the set gave a 1930's vibe that continued throughout the show. And it was a heck of a show. magic, theatrics and story created an excellent off Broadway production.
