Shiny and glittering out of the corner of my eye, this large piece of public art is placed near the…read morefront of the Valerie C Woodward Center facility that houses a number of Charlotte-Mecklenburg city/county offices. From the artist's website, "Pillars of Dreams... makes a soft landing in a field of quiet moments and curious interactions. Open columns drop down from the floating canopy into a field of seating, open paths for wandering, and unbounded spaces for self-assembly. More than an idiosyncratic space for individual discovery, Pillars of Dreams establishes a public agora for visitors and employees at this important community interface between local government and Charlotte-Mecklenburg residents." The caption points out that the artist is Marc Fornes and it is powder-coated aluminum with stainless-steel rivets making up some 3564 parts and 54,000 rivets. Step into and under the center of this public art for a moment. The artist has put openings into the aluminum skin that let some light in. It reflects off the pieces and makes for a pretty sight. Shadows, projected and reflected light in the space below are lovely. Check it out when you're in the area. [Review 13437 overall, 756 of 2020.]

It is on the right side of the building easily accessible if you are coming from the front. Make sure to go close up and look from underneath to see the wide array of colors.

Every single thing about staying here made me regret it. As soon as I pulled up I could hear loud…read moreblaring rap music across the parking lot. One of the staff was "cleaning out the shuttle van" and had the music turned all the way up. Perhaps this is a perk of staying here. Thump thump thump... You are treated to a check-in that doesn't take place in a hotel lobby, but in a dingy harshly lit room with cobwebs and bulletproof glass and spackle and God knows what else on the walls and floor. You are treated to a poster that almost takes up the whole wall outlining their rules such as: your room is only serviced twice a week, your towels are only replaced during that time and you cannot exchange towels any other time. Fees for this and that and what forms of payment and ID they won't accept etc. The rooms are accessed by a keycard like many other hotels. If you lose your keycard here, it is a $20 charge. While I have never been booked into a jail, this is EXACTLY what I imagine it is like. They charge a $50 "smoking deposit" for whatever reason that they refund back if you don't smoke in the room. But yet if you do, they charge you more if they find out you do, so that makes absolutely no sense. Since I'm a non-smoker, I found it irritating. I go up to my "non-smoking" room to find an ashtray on the nightstand. The toilet doesn't flush. It doesn't appear the toilet was cleaned as the seat is down but the lid is up. The shower is only what I can describe as completely disgusting. The floors obviously haven't been cleaned. The soaps were just thrown into a dirty crevice next to the sink. One of the lights didn't work and the other ones that did were so harsh and glaring that the lighting alone made me dread being there. Drips on the tv screen, none of the clocks set to the right time. The tin bed frame made a loud pop sound every time there was movement. The pillows looked like someone had laid on them and were suitable for a homeless encampment. There was NOTHING relaxing or pleasant about staying here. I would have never stayed here if I saw the room first. It was gross. It didn't feel safe at all either. Random people walking around the parking lot. Since the toilet didn't flush, I requested another room. The staff had me wait in this holding sell of a check in area while they went up to inspect the room I just checked into three minutes ago. Came back down and gave me another room on the other side of the hotel and that toilet didn't flush either. This property obviously has a plumbing problem. They have a broken down vehicle marked "security" parked at the entrance to the parking lot which obviously has not moved in quite some time. Every single aspect of staying here is unpleasant, dirty, shady, and sketchy.

Our flights were unfortunately delayed getting home due to weather so we decided to get a room. This gem was the only place available, so we decided why not? How bad could it possibly be? It was worse than anything we could have imagined. First off, we arrived late due to the flight delays and found a locked lobby door after our Uber driver dropped us off. Stood at the plexiglass window as if we were trying to cash a check in a bad neighborhood in 30 degree weather. We finally get into our room after refusing to pay the $50 cash deposit. Who, in this modern age asks for a cash deposit? We selected the "non smoking" room only to find that it smelled like cigarettes and whatever they use to disguise the smell of cigarettes. Key evidence was when I pulled the sheets down and found a pubic hair and cigarettes burn marks through the top cover. It gets better....... The door doesn't lock so we wedge the two chairs against the door to keep intruders out. The drawer handle is torn off. Mold stains in both the bedroom and bathroom ceiling. We didn't even bother turning on the heat because we didn't want to chance further heating the awful smell. It's a shame that a franchise motel owned by a large entity "Choice Hotels International, Inc." Obviously isn't being inspected for any type of quality control standards.
