But where better to seven-ball your brother, or completely miscue and hit the white off the table towards your fourth pint, than Rileys. I could easily spend a weekend here, shooting pool and sinking beer, if my puny bank balance would allow. There's an array of pool tables, and a few snooker tables for the hardcore, to choose from, US and English. The cues are a better standard than you'll find in any pub, and the baize, while not Crucible standard, is usually in pretty good nick too. It almost invariably proves cheaper than playing anywhere else, unless you're with someone extremely slow, as you can play for an hour for just over £6. Riley's often has offers on too, so you can get 3 hours for the price of 2. Even though I'm a bit of a chubber there's normally adequate room for queuing, but if it's particularly busy and the balls dictate you sometimes have to wait for a second to allow someone else to take a shot. TV's showing the latest sports results/matches are a bonus.

We ordered food which was ok, one of the items wasn't available but they took for it at the bar. Lee came over, explained and offered us an alternative from the same starters menu section, lots of choice but nothing my hubby wanted so she refunded us straight away. Really well mannered and fun. Kids loved her dancing with them when she was collecting glasses and she fixed the machine when it didn't give our son his sweets. Has an arcade and a big pick and mix machine in the pub so brilliant for the kids. When our food came the chef had done us extra on one starter to make up for what they didn't have, you don't get that many places. Delicious meal and a big difference between now and a year ago.

I'm not sure what I am expecting from a sports bar except a good selection of screens but maybe I yearn to find somewhere that lives up to the standards set by Cheers? At Cafe Sports, however, nobody will know your name. It's possible that Mr Carragher would think that a wet mid-week afternoon was not the best time for me to get a good flavour of the place but I have seen this place on a Saturday night and I'm not sure that's a side of the establishment that I want to reflect! It's just bland, Sky Sports News on every screen just strikes me as a bit desperate - we need sport, any sport, even hockey news! - To be fair to the place, it does what it says on the tin and I'm sure Cafe Sports will be a good venue for the World Cup but as somewhere I have visited outside of a notable sporting event it doesn't really have much else to offer.

The homemade scouse takes pride of place on the menu but you can also find fish and chips, bangers and mash, cottage pie, even a chip butty or a gargantuan Yorkshire pud filled with roast beef and spuds, gravy and veg. Believe me, come here when you're ravenous because otherwise you'll be so packed full you'll want to fall bobos. You can even get breakfast here if you pop in during the morning, and it's not all fried eggs and sausages and ketchup, there's fresh fruit salad and a super muesli packed with all sorts of goodies too, so even the health conscious can enjoy a bit of sporty action in the AM. Smoothies are available all day and are deliciously tangy and pulpy. Puddings are classics like fudge cake, carrot cake, banana split and sticky toffee pudding and come highly recommended along with their sorbets and yoghurts. The place is packed full of lots of tasteful sports memorabilia and there's a plethora of TV screens so no one misses out on the nice sporting view which is rather excellent. Dotted around the venue are a number of plazma televisions that screen match after match after match and when there aren't any matches on, are usually tuned, predictably, to Liverpool TV. The staff are friendly and talkative and make your visit to what is billed as 'The World Famous Arkles' a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

But the food here is also pretty good and the service prompt and efficient. Portions were rather large (This pub is part of a group called Hungry Horse). Two Knockerbocker Glories were huge but not as big as the Waffle stack enjoyed by daughter in law and my wife. been a few times and two times now have had a dogey belly the next morning and been throwing up..i…read moredont think its the food but i think the glases and pumps are dirty =( the food is cheap and nice. the bar selection how ever is very poor much less then your local boozer but then again primarily its not a pub its a hotel so i guess thats why. there is hardly any staff in the place and service is slow getitng ur food out etc. you can also but stood for ages at the bar waiting to be noticed =(
