As part of my Neolithic Marathon experience after the disappointments of worse than expected going in the Vale of Pewsey, Redhorn Hill is a major landmark. It means you are nearly halfway (though like Tower Bridge in the London Marathon, the reality is you've a bit to go). It's also what most people consider the toughest challenge of the course. You've already crossed one line of downs, but there you went up the shallow slope, and down the steep face. Here you are going straight up the steeper side. It looms over the last stretch in the valley.
As you come up to the hill the road disappears into woodland and starts to curve. And at every turn it gets steeper, then steeper, then steeper Personally I didn't attempt to run it (even those who run all the way in marathons tell each other it's acceptable to walk Redhorn), but I did overtake a few walkers!
At the top you come out into a bit of a party atmosphere. There's one of the major marshalling points on the course, with busses, tents and people buzzing around. I don't remember a view back over the Vale (perhaps because of the woods, perhaps I just didn't look), but from here you are on Salisbury Plain.
