It's not far from U.T. , central DT and it's nestled between I35 and Mopac, in the middle of 40th, 39th and Speedway in the Hyde Park neighborhood. Plenty of parking around the building and it's parking garage. Come as you are!

I saw an advertisement on tv about a Christmas concert taking place at HPBC that was open to the public and complete with a choir, orchestra, special guest and a live nativity! Because live orchestra concerts, theatrical plays and operas were always a holiday tradition and fond memory of mine growing up, I immediately told my husband about it and that we had to go to at least check it out. With my husband and teenager in tow, we arrived at the church that was stunningly decorated in a Christmas theme; we were warmly welcomed then made our way to our seats in the sanctuary. When the choir and orchestra started, I automatically knew that my family and I would be in for something special, and I wasn't wrong. The evening consisted of an amazing orchestra, choir, children's choir, audience participation, guests such as: Leo Day and the East View HS drumline, live enactments of classic Christmas songs; and even Santa made an appearance! Some of the songs of the evening were: Sleigh Ride, Deck the Halls, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Joy to the World, The Little Drummer Boy, Hallelujah Chorus, etc. Toward the end of the concert, I was delighted to see and hear the senior pastor of HPBC, Dr. J. Kie Bowman, share the good news of the Gospel and the true meaning of CHRISTmas to the audience. The HPBC "Night of Christmas" concert was beautifully organized and was presented and performed in complete excellence. I would have gladly paid an admission fee, but, it was a free concert open to the public, that I encourage everyone to support by attending in the years to come!! My family and I loved it so much that it is now a new family Christmas tradition of ours that we look forward to inviting friends and family to in the future.

I have never felt so welcomed as an outsider as I did when I attend this church. Absolutely plan to drive the hour one way every week to keep going. This church is special and it is hard to find a church with such wonderful qualities that instantly feels like a family.

Also, some of the rite is in Arameic, which is believed to be the original language spoken by Jesus and his disciples, so that just makes the experience all the more mysterious, and in my case, enticing. I love a good mystery, or two, or three. You get a red book to follow along in the ritual. To the left you see the English translation of the rite, to the right the Syriac translation. This feels like Israel to the left and Ishmael to the right to me. Ok, the vestments used by the clergy are super cool. Very formal, specially the bishop style vestments the high priest wears, and the big fans the young men use during the mass to fan at the priest, plain old remind me of Cleopatra and her slaves fanning at her to cool her off, so yeah, Egyptian vibes here too. Fully trinitarian and fully Catholic, this church, which follows the West Syrian Rite, as opposed to the Latin Rite or the Novus Ordo, is a refreshing drink of water for those of us in the desert. The Fr. In charge right now, Fr. Don, is absolutely welcoming and popular among his flock and I just have to thank him for being patient and accommodating with me, a poor handmaid of the Lord, my God, why have you forsaken me!!! It is finished. Right? Please tell me it is done. Please God, please. Ok thanks bye.

My wife and I recently moved to Austin from California and absolutely love the city. Great food and…read moregreat people - one of the friendliest places I've lived. The people at this church are no different, they are amazingly friendly. Their current building isn't fancy. They keep it clean but it isn't the W or anything. They are moving into a new place on Guadalupe soon which will be great. Here's my personal experience: my wife and I were recently pregnant (well my wife was pregnant, not me but you get the point) we decided to take the "Having a Happy Baby" course they offer. It wasn't expensive and I didn't have to mortgage the house or anything - it was $50 for me and $50 for my wife - so $100 in total (that included the workbooks). The information was pretty straightforward and made a lot of sense to me. Stuff like "make sure you're eating nutritious foods while pregnant, make sure you're getting enough rest, etc." It suggested not taking harmful drugs while you're pregnant - nothing controversial there. One concept I really liked had to do with physical pain. The idea is that physical pain to an expectant mother can not only be physically harmful to a fetus but also emotionally and mentally harmful to the baby in the future - this is an eye-opening concept and changed the rest of our pregnancy. The course also gives ways to keep your baby happy when they get upset. Both my wife and I have used these many times. In fact, I used it two day ago and it worked like a charm. Our little guy is so happy, exactly what we were hoping to get from the training. He's always smiling, giggling, talking (in his own way), etc. When he gets upset, we have easy to use tools to cheer him up and get him out of his funk and make him happy. The info we learned on this course far outweighs the $100 we spent. I've spent WAY MORE on other baby stuff that wasn't half as useful. They have a ton of courses there. I can't give a review for all of them as I haven't done them all. But they have courses that address money, getting motivated, organization, business, achieving your goals, increasing confidence, etc. I will most likely do all of them!

If you want to see for yourself, I suggest you do some of the free courses on the Scientology.org website.
