We find our place to park and make a bee line for some mini donuts for the little squirt and a sausage in a bun for me. Then we take a seat on the steps of the ice rink, listen to the pan flute and watch the crowd. The Red Deer Farmer's Market, is large, it is filled with a variety of vendors, from food to pottery, to jewelry, clothes, fruit and tons of buskers ready to entertain the masses. Going there is like a ritual for the locals as demonstrated by the large crowds it attracts. I love the atmosphere. As much as I love the market, I have to admit, I loathe the parking. Even with this negative, it doesn't detract me from loving it entirely.

I was also lucky that we parked at said lodge (which was blocked off to the public) as parking for others was indeed a nightmare. This market is huge! I ran over there in search of a cold beverage and came back with a delicious egg and bacon sandwich. I only had 15 minutes to run over there before I would get caught so I only saw 1/4 of what they had to offer and boy did it look fun. Amazing fruits and veggies, food vendors galore, homemade wares and entertainment. One could easily spend hours poking around and eating. The egg and bacon sandwich was on an incredibly fresh roll and had a generous amount of thick cut bacon on it. Thankfully the line moved quickly as the cooks operated as a well oiled machine - this was a popular stand and offered many different varieties of breakfast - you could get the traditional or back bacon for $7.50 CAD. Drinks were $3.00 CAD so I didn't have enough for both - bacon always wins!

Who doesn't crave a cold ice cream after a hot day at the water?! Their variety of ice creams is fantastic, even seeing lactose free options. Everything from Maple Walnut, sherbets, bubblegum and pistachio. This trip we ordered a baby size ($3.60) chocolate mint (classic and good) and rocket fuel (similar to bubblegum in taste but maybe a bit more grape tasting); they were just the right size for the kids. And we also ordered single scoops ($5.15) of the wild spicy chocolate and churro (this was my top fav that we ordered, it was the hardest/coldest one so it didn't melt quite as fast either, but the Flavor was super unique and I love that spicy hit you get) and the pineapple sherbet( very refreshing and light, perfect for a hot summer day). The ice cream was really soft and seemed to melt extremely fast, wishing it was a bit colder/harder. But after knowing that I recommend you find a seat and eat it right after you order it. Service was fast, we didn't have to wait long to order and the staff were good about double checking flavor choices. Handing us each cone as they scooped it. Wood damage near the window fronting the main parking lot. We couldn't ask to move because we took the last seats for the evening. I killed three bugs by grabbing paper towels from the women's washroom at different times because they were coming up from the wood. Then my teenager informed me not to kill the last bug because he sees ants crawling up and will carry the last bug to their home. I couldn't see ants on my side. He was right. Carpenter ants carried the fourth dead bug back inside the damaged wood. I asked my husband and son if they wanted to leave the restaurant and we could eat elsewhere. They said no I think we'll be OK.
