Come take a picture with Smokey the Bear out front! He's waiting for you! Located in the Dixie National Forest, this Visitor Center is located right off Highway 12. It is 7 miles from Panguitch, UT and 13 miles from Bryce Canyon National Park. TIP: It's only open from late Spring to early October. There are educational displays here. You can purchase clothing, magnets, bottles, toys, books, and other souvenirs. As always, you can ask staff questions and get a map of the area. Outside are large panels with information pertinent to the area for recreation activities, wildlife and plants here in the Dixie National Forest. Lots of good advice and particulars! About 1.3 miles (maybe 3 minutes out) East from this Visitor Center, there are 2 Red Canyon Arches (or tunnels). They span Highway 12 and you drive through them. They are close in distance. Be prepared to take pictures or stop at the turnout. Along this road to & from Bryce Canyon you can see some magnificent hoodoos & cliffs. It's no wonder this is called a Scenic Byway! For those interested in rubber stamp images, they have one for Dixie National Forest, Red Canyon _ Dixie National Forest, and Smokey (paw print). Take time to stop in at this visitor center! Stretch your legs. There are short trails where you can explore the area. If we have time the next time we stop in, I would love to explore the Pink Ledges Trail and the Hoodoo Trail. read more

Don't get confused and think this is the same visitors center for Bryce Canyon. The two are completely different. The location is pretty large, has a decent gift shop and clean bathrooms. There are a few good trails nearby. Service is spotty here. Beautiful location. read more

The rangers take good care of the restrooms, the center and the parking lot. Original ranger cabin on opposite end of parking lot. Lots of maps and pamphlets for the surrounding hiking areas. The marked hiking trails are to the left of the visitor center. Wear good shoes. read more

I don't usually write reviews for places like this; however, I was extremely impressed with Red Canyon Visitor Center. My family and I drove from opposite directions and met in the Red Canyon for a week of camping. My brother and mother drove from Wisconsin, while I drove from California. The staff and "mascot" (a small dog who is super chill. I cannot remember his name) were friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. Since it is the beginning of the off season the place wasn't too crowded. There are signs outside of the visitors center with explanations of which animals one might see, vegetation, desert safety, etc. The grounds are well kept, the bathrooms are clean, and there are short trails around the visitors center that can be explored. I was directed to where I was headed and I was off. I would highly recommend stopping in to this visitors center and checking out all of the information that they have to offer. read more

We did the arches trail and it's an easy short hike but can be easily missed. We ended up missing the turn and going half a mile out before turning around. I'd recommend doing this on your way in or out of Bryce Canyon National Park. read more

Loved this park! Highly recommend. Trails were well marked, everything was clean, super helpful employees at the visitors center.

We pulled off the road so my husband could take pictures of the rock formations here on our way to Bryce Canyon NP. He discovered that the roadside stop was actually Red Canyon, part of Dixie National Forest. We walked up the trail and absolutely loved exploring this canyon. You can go wherever you want here and see it all. If we hadn't been headed to Bryce we would have stayed longer. One of the coolest things we did on an epic trip that included Zion and Bryce NPs. This campground is AMAZING... not only is it beautiful, but the bathrooms are very clean, hot showers are $2, and we were able to drive up at 5pm and there were many campsites for tents and RVs available. We accidentally came across this gem coming from Las Vegas on our Zion, Bruce Canyon, and North Rim Grand Canyon road trip. Our trip was a spur of the moment trip. Unfortunately most campsites in the national parks would need to be reserved 6-12 months in advance or you have to get to a site early in the morning and try your luck. My husband and I were traveling with our 10 year old and 21 month old, so we were traveling around nap times hence our late arrival. The campground was quiet. We picked a spot back from the road. There are firepits and grills for each site. They also have areas for day use. read more

Red Canyon raises the bar for National Forest Service installations all over the country. I'm much more accustomed to USFS being a more rustic experience with bare bones permit stations and little in the way of interpretation. The Red Canyon Visitor Center is much more akin to the visitor centers found in national parks without the crowds.
