Red Bird Mission School was founded by Red Bird Mission as a pre-K through High School education opportunity for those less fortunate in the Southeast mountains of Kentucky. It is funded by donations , churches and other money available to non-profit private schools.
I first became aware of it in the 1960's when I was part of a United Methodist Women's group that had the title Red Bird Circle. We met twice per month and kept an ongoing schedule. Once per month we would have a speaker or program put together by a member of our circle. The second meeting of the month we would visit with each other as we trimmed Campbell Soup labels that had been donated by the entire membership of the church and surrounding community. These Campbell Soup labels where then packaged and sent to the Red Bird Mission School. My understanding was the School used the Campbell Soup label program to purchase things as small as balls for playground equipment and as large as a van for the school.
It wasn't until years later when I moved to Kentucky that I learned more about the school. It is private but tuition to it is based on need and might be as low as ten dollars per month. It now has a dorm for High School students to live on campus. It is very much a part of Red Bird Mission and spreads the Christian faith in its teachings. It is an important part of a very poor portion of Kentucky.
I am glad I did my small part in donating to the school as a teenager and young adult. At this point in my life I am able to make monetary donations to help support such an important School. You might Google the Red Bird Mission School yourself and learn more about it and ways you can support it. read more
