Rude, over priced, dreadful customer service, £ signs in their eyes…read more When I broke my tooth I went to my nearest dentist - St Clements - where my flatmate had been and raved about how quickly they saw him. I knew they were mostly private, so I didn't expect it come cheap, but I did think the money they were charging you through the nose for would at least be top notch. From the second I got on the phone I knew I was onto a wrong 'un. Here are just SOME of the dreadful phrases that came out of the mouths of the receptionists AND dentist: - "You do know that we MOSTLY do private as we don't get paid enough to do NHS" - "If you want a white filling on the NHS you could try at the hospital, I guess, but they'd probably just give you a silver one." - "Your last dentist obviously didn't know what he was doing. That could be rotting under your teeth or some weird filling". My previous dentist was FIRST CLASS and far better than the dreadful service I got here. Utterly pretentious even before I parted with my cash. And I wasn't the only one, as I awaited my check up I sat next to a woman who came in to ask about NHS services and was treated as though she'd come in wearing rags. The sad thing is they told me I needed a filling, but the awful service made me walk out without the treatment. But the pain I felt caused me to call up today for an appointment. The receptionist laughed disgustedly at me and said "yes you've left it a long time and you need a lot of work" - the tone, patronising and aggrevated. No way am I giving them a penny of my money. Not one iota of care about their patients unless their paying private and don't mention the dreaded "NHS" word. I'd rather be in pain then call them again.

Chiswick Park Dental Practice is, quite frankly, the best dentist in England…read more Hailing from America, I was shocked to find that - of the dental practices I dealt with in England - a max of 15 minutes was allocated for a dental cleaning. In the US, a full hour is allocated for a dental cleaning which includes a quick check by the dentist at the end of the appointment. In England, dental cleanings and dentist visits are two separate appointments which took some getting used to but I have actually come to like because it's not necessary that I see a dentist every six months but it is necessary that I get a dental cleaning every six months - something instilled in me by my other since my first tooth popped through my gums. At CPDP, their dental cleanings are 30 minutes in length which provide the hygienist enough time to remove tartar and polish your teeth (no flossing as provided in America). There is an American hygenist at CPDP named LeAnn (or LeAnna?) who does an excellent job for those Americans out there looking for an American hygenist. Pradip Gandhi is a very thorough dentist with great bedside manner; I'd guess he was trained in America but I can't say that with certainty. He's honest and willing to answer any questions you have. For example, chipped the backside of my upper front tooth about eight months ago. I mentioned this to him and he said that if it is not bothering me, that he recommends to leave it alone, stating further that he could patch it but that in his experience, the patch generally would come loose within 2--3 months because of the way I chipped my tooth (merely breaking off part of the enamel, not a break like missing an entire section of my tooth). I really appreciated that he was honest with me and felt as though he had my best interest in mind. The one thing to note about CPDP though is they have a very strict cancellation policy. If you cancel within 48 hours of your appointment, you will be charged. Easy to get to via the Chiswick Park and Turnham Green Tube stations.

However, Dr Cullen is almost impossible to have a conversation with, or ask questions of it's just his natural manner, but it makes things difficult and awkward and you often don't get answers to your questions/concerns. His nurse tries her best to be the middle man, and I can understand that it gets frustrating for her. However, that doesn't justify the fact that she speaks to him in an insolent manner which is embarrassing, to the point that I don't know where to look/what to do, and feel like a spare part; it's wholly inappropriate. Also, it makes the atmosphere stressful which is the last thing you need. She seems to be very good at her job otherwise. Beyond that everything was much more than fine in the beginning; however, as soon as I complained about something everything changed. The attitude of all the staff towards me changed, and Dr Cullen no longer had time for me even when I tried to seek his advice for an ongoing issue. Prior to that, he would really would go out of his way doing all sorts of things which were truly 'added value', and set him completely apart from the rest. He is also truly a proactive dentist, and was the first in my life to set out a treatment plan and give me advice. Had previous dentists taken such care, I wouldn't have ended up with such a mess in my mouth. However, I finally had enough of the 'atmosphere' created at each visit and the fact that they both thought nothing of it, the inability to discuss my concerns, his new couldn't-care-less attitude towards me, and the endless stories each visit about the wonders he'd worked on other people's teeth (which flagged up a confidentiality issue with me I hope those patients gave their permission, because I would not like photos/details of my mouth to be shown to/discussed with other people) and went elsewhere. I also visited the hygienist several times, and got so frustrated that I chose to visit another hygienist also. She spends a good portion (much longer than the 5 minutes that is on a notice in her treatment room) of the appointment making notes on the computer, which is a waste of time because she asks the same questions, and says the same things, each appointment. It gets very tedious, and takes up even more of the appointment unnecessarily. The time actually spent on my teeth made me feel as if I wasn't getting value for money at all. Also, the one time I asked for something specific to be treated I had to ask repeatedly, and it wasn't done effectively even though it was something easy to resolve.
