My 11 year old nephew, 1 year old daughter and myself recently moved to Bakersfield and just…read morehappened to see this church and decided to check it out since we were in need of a new church now anyways. We tend to stick with the smaller churches because we like the more intimate feeling, but I'm happy we tried New Life out. Yes, it is large, but everything has signs saying where to go and everyone I've asked for assistance has been nothing less than extremely helpful. This is a recovery church which I love, never have I felt so non judged at a church. I have tattoos and so do a majority of other members. Tats and kids without being married are n out shunned but welcomed with open arms. I was however raised that men are to be the spiritual heads though and woman preach here too sometimes. As a woman I think it's cool, but biblically I'm still not sure. Other than that no complaints. The nursery is great, but they do not change diapers so make sure they go in with a clean one. The school age children have a worship area to themselves and my nephew loves that another child preaches to them (not sure if this is the norm). Great worship music and live band!!! I'll be joining a life group and connecting through bible study so if things continue to go well this will be our new church home.

A couple weekends ago I saw that they were having baptisms on Sunday so I made a reservation and I got baptized today. Everything is pretty casual. So don't feel weird if you have tattoos. You don't have to come fancy. I stayed for the sermon and it was very nice. It wasn't extremely long and it got to the point. Everybody was nice. They have water and coffee there for you. When you come in to get baptized, they will give you a shirt to wear. So it is best to wear shorts and bring clothes to change. They do have towels for you. When I was a child, I had to go to the J.W. church and I would be there for about 4-6 hours long and it would be literally painful. There was so much negative reasons why I left. It honestly made me uncomfortable. This church made me feel welcome. I felt like everyone was just human. Me and my husband will be back.

Ok, so I've been here a handful of times and not one had to do with a church service, unless you…read morecount a wedding. But I'm not because I don't consider myself a parishioner or even a guest at this church. So why have I been here? Well, my first visit was a group interview for a local business. It went down in flames and I ended up not getting the job. But that's a story for another day. That was my first look into this facility. It was very large and nicely laid out. They seemed to be more centered around making this a community center versus just a church. As I also said, I attended a friends wedding which was fantastic. Everything was beautiful, and they even enjoyed the mandatory premarital interviews/counseling. Lastly, I've been here several times to preform my civic duty-to vote!! I always enjoy that special time in November where I can pretend to make a difference. I'm proud to be able to vote and enjoy it thoroughly, I'm just never sure how much my vote counts in certain elections. Meh-but that's politics and not the basis for the review. What I love about this church are the numerous volunteers who opt to help during the election. Just by asking, I found out most were church members. Being inside those walls felt homey and good. But then again, I was overcome with my emotions from voting so maybe I wasn't thinking straight. Total voters coma. The facility is always immaculate. The grounds are super clean and well maintained. They also have a permanent Salvation Army trailer parked on the south side if you're interested. And there always seems to be events happening that fill up the numerous parking lots. They must be doing something right! I'm not sure that I'm ready to start attending church here. But for now, I'm content with visiting to vote.

Sermons are very much based in scripture. The pastors always have multiple verses (and the…read moresurrounding context) to support the Sunday message being preached. Worship song selections seem to be made very carefully to make sure the lyrics/messages are consistent with the Church's values and not taking unnecessary artistic liberties (I.e., not secularizing or misappropriating biblical teachings/concepts). The vast majority of people I have spoken with seem committed to fulfilling God's purpose for both themselves and for the ministries they are involved in. I've not been left with the impression that the people serving are "in it" for their own personal recognition or glory, which is very refreshing and important for anyone serving in a church ministry. The grounds are kept very nice and the auditorium, community center, classrooms, bathrooms, and common are clean, organized, and up-to-date.
