Avoid Mondays and Fridays. I came on Tuesday afternoon about 2pm, almost no line. Do research and be prepared or bring all acceptable and requied documentation. The REAL ID costs $6.

This is a very efficient place even if it's not beautiful or modern or comfortable. But it has what you need to get your official IDs. Mainly it's just for the Real ID and both non drivers license and drivers license Real ID. The one w the good start you had to get since May 2025 to travel. The security guard today on July 29, 2025 was very sweet and kind. I really appreciate him. The staff were also friendly and kind And answer my questions Wow, a place in Chicago that does not require an appointment and opens at 7:30 in the morning during weekdays. if you wanna get a non drivers license Real ID or get your drivers license Real ID you don't have to make an appointment. you get a temporary ID the same day and they will send you the actual ID in the mail. It is accessible by walking train and bus, and the CTA line is directly basically next to the supercenter where you can get the CTA subway or El lines to. Clark/Lake. The office is on Clark Street and between Randolph Street and Lake Street.

Late in the day at the Real ID Supercenter. Super!

Everything was well organized. I got there at 7:30 am and all the lines flowed effortlessly. I was out of there by 8:15am.

There's not much they can do about this. All windows were open for processing, even ancillary booths that don't have numbers. All workers with the exception of one were extremely friendly and helpful. Total time from queueing in line to finish: 2.5 hrs Arrived at 6:50 am. Already 150 people ahead of me. Finished at 9:20 am. Here's the process: FOR license / ID: -line starts on SE side of the building, loops around the front sidewalk, and goes to the rear of the building -workers will inquire your needs and validate documentation while outside in line -once inside, photo and identity is taken -then residency and ID needs brokered at separate counter -pay cashier in separate line -move window over to receive temp license -done :) receive new license in mail in 3 weeks FOR vehicle registration: -line starts at back of building -cannot speak to specifics as I was grabbing a real ID only Tips: -be patient. Read a book, watch a show, listen to music -review all required documentation online before arrival -organize all documentation with paper clips / sticky notes per grouping (signature, DOB SSN, residency). Multiple workers will request specific items along the way. An out of state license (signature), passport (DOB), social security card (SSN), voters registration card (residency) and bank/mortgage statement (residency) are what I used for switching my license from MI to IL real ID -test is waived for out of state licenses if your current license is still valid (not expired) -bundle up if it's winter. You'll likely spend hours outside -get there early. By the time I left at 9:20, the line was around 250 people long -bring a lawn chair if you'd like to sit while in line

I waited in line and I told the person that I just moved here and wanted to know the forms to fill out to get Illinois plates. The first thing out of his mouth was "Give me your license" I was pretty disturbed as the tone was forceful. At the end of giving them all my info they gave me some crazy answer that I needed to contact the car manufacture and have them contact the bank that owns my title of the car. That was the answer I got and I think they are wrong. I went online and filled out the form to get Illinois plates. My advice is stay away from this flag ship office and go online.

Sent me to her supervisor, who confirmed my papers were correct, and sent me back to the woman who mocked me. That woman then refused to give me a number ticket and again mocked me until I told her I wanted to speak to a manager. Finally was put with a kind person after I complained to the manager about being given the run-around and was able to complete my visit. It's astonishing how rude people can be and of course, none of these employees have name tags so you can't get their name when you file a complaint. Sincerely hope this place gets looked into and some changes get made because nobody should be treated the way I was today.

I think there are plenty of folks who also don't know that you're required to make an appointment now, so undoubtedly folks show up uninitiated. I'm not sure if it's for all tasks that one has to make an appointment... when I went to another office to get my temporary disabled permit during my third trimester, they let me in, but maybe they were just being nice? The folks in this location were annoying but maybe it's part of the job description, I don't know. When I was moving from the first line (it's a land of lines in here) to tell them why I was here to the line to get my photo taken, there was no one else in the photo line so I just walked directly to where the front of that line would be. They made me move and walk back around through the stanchions to get to the exact same place I originally was. Uh.... I HATE their "system" of making people write their SSN on a piece of scrap paper. I cannot believe how ridiculous this is--what year is it again?? I really hope one of the upgrades that Alexei is implementing has to do with technology, because it is just wild that they can't somehow provide or route that information another way. They have a red/yellow/green line system which at least makes it easy to route people from this station to that station. The saving grace of these various stations is that maybe it's what makes the appointment so short. I was thankfully out in fewer that 30 minutes.

I had an appointment--which is a must for this location--and arrived about 10 minutes early. I showed my confirmation email to the gentleman outside, who directed me to the short line that had already formed. When it was time for my appointment slot, he called us in, and from there the process moved smoothly through each step. Yes, you do get into several different lines for the various stages, but each one moves quickly. Every staff member I interacted with was polite, professional, and even cheerful, which is always appreciated. From start to finish, the whole process took about 50-60 minutes, which I consider very efficient for the DMV. My biggest tip: come prepared with all your required documents--it will make everything go much faster. And again, you need an appointment here. If you can't find one right away, check the DMV website at 6:30 AM--that's when new slots often open. Overall, a smooth and well-organized experience. Thank you!
