Mark at Ray's has been my only barber for 8 years. He does an amazing job and is an old-school barber who knows how to cut your hair only using scissors. Scissor cuts are now really hard to find. The quality is very consistent. I don't plan on finding a new barber so long as I continue to have the excellent experiences I've had. A scissor cut is $40, which is rightly more than one relying predominantly on clippers. That's a good deal for Manhattan. It's also less than what a friend of mine pays in downtown Jersey City. I typically tip $20 since Mark always does great work. Mark is also my young son's barber, and he does a great job with him, too. read more

Very friendly stylists, and they take the time to cut your hair the way you want it - with scissors and/or clippers. I really enjoyed the hot towel. I met the owner Ray, who is a great guy, and I've had my hair styled by at least 5 other stylists and have never been disappointed. read more

I live in Hoboken, but the profusion of "bro"ber shops that use clippers more than scissors for a $50 cut that takes 10 minutes turned me off. Found myself in FiDi for work a few months back. Walked into Ray's and this was now my third trip. I've had a different barber each time, yet each cut has been professional and of excellent quality. Not only that, but $40 is the same price for most places nowadays, yet Ray's offers a luxurious setting in a well-sized establishment with multiple chairs and multiple barriers each time I've gone. I've always walked in and never had to wait. Not only that, but I am admittedly poor at describing how I'd like my hair to look (despite having the same hairstyle for the past 30 years), and each barber has understood. Ray's barber shop is hands down the best barber shop in Manhattan and possibly the universe. I read on their website before my first cut that they put their souls into their work and frankly I was skeptical. However, after my cut from Mark I whole heartedly believe it. Mark is a wizard with scissors or a buzzer in his hands. I am definitely way more attractive after my cut. A bonus was great vibes and cool music. Oh believe me I'll be back! read more

Today, he went in for his weekly hair cut and the barber that cut his hair left him with some painful awful looking scratches in the back of his neck! Like an animal scratched him! Picture below! Ray's rocks! If they had 5 stars and a Powerball, that's the rating I'd give. As previously reported, a truly sharp, clean flat top is difficult to do. Ray does it, flawlessly, every time. Make sure to ask for Ray; if they're not busy with other clients, all the other barbers come watch him. A little haircut history: Ray's stands literally in the shadow of the Freedom Tower. After 9/11, many of the cops and firefighters around here started getting flat tops. The taper you see here on the sides is how they liked it, so it's known as the Irish Style. Many Latino guys like the sides to go straight up, known as the Spanish Style. Pay no attention to the model in these pictures, just the haircut. This is how a flattop should look. Other people might've had a good experience but Ray completely butchered my haircut. The place was empty when I came but he rushed as if there was a big hurry and went way too high up and cut a crooked line between the top and the side. He also didn't layer my hair correctly either so it looks ridiculous and won't stay put no matter how much I try. I came in with 10inch long hair it should've been a piece of cake not to screw this up but he somehow found a way. It's hard to believe all the good reviews honestly this is a really bad haircut and the impact of this is that I have to completely cut off all my hair now and go military style because there's no fixing this terrible job. I work in the area and started getting haircuts here about once every 3-4 weeks. Totally reasonable price given how good these folks are. They're fast, so I can easily go on my lunch break. There was only one time that we ran over time and it was because the barber was meticulously making sure the cut was perfect, which I appreciated. I got a little cocky when I found a less expensive barber close by ($20 for a fade instead of $28) but I regretted it. The cut wasn't necessarily bad, but the space itself and the barbers were unpleasant. I would rather pay the extra $8 to be in a nice, clean place with professional barbers. Def go here! read more

Let me preface this by saying I've been coming here for years but today will be my last time. I arrived about 25 minutes before close and asked for a simple 2 on top and to have my beard trimmed down to about half of what was then a relatively full mountain man length. To my shock, the barber took the same clipper length to my beard as he did my hair, cutting off about 4/5 the length. Seeing my unhappiness he improvised some work around the mouth, changing the shape of my beard without asking me. I don't know if this guy was looking at the clock and not listening to what I asked for, but if you are going to cut off the majority of a man's beard, you better make sure that you're on the same page. Getting married in a month so this is even more annoying. This is the second time that someone here has taken my beard down way too low, so to my fellow bearded compatriots, I advise you strongly to steer clear of here and use one of the other barbers in the neighborhood that are a little less friendly with the sheers and communicate better during the process. read more

I've had a simple beard trim done at perhaps 10-12 different barbershops in New York and always had a decent experience--one worthy of leaving a decent tip, at the very least. This was fairly awful, a hard feat to achieve when all you're doing is using a trimmer on someone's face and neck for a few minutes. Alex (?) was in a terrible mood when I walked in, apparently miffed that I didn't want a haircut and just a beard trim ("just" pay someone $12+tax and potentially tip for using a beard trimmer on me--how dare I be so cheap). He didn't listen to me, didn't get the lengths right, and was in an awful rush to get me to leave. I didn't want to pay these people but I suppose I had to. There are good barbershops in the area; I only went here because they were open at 8 am on a Monday. Note to self: don't do that again. read more

I work in the woolworth so this place just 3 minutes away. It is an ideal place for me to sneak out for 20 min to get a quick hair cut. It is only $26 for men's haircut so it is as good as it gets in NYC. This shop is big and a lot of people working at any any given time. You will have no wait if you go in mid morning or afternoon. Even during busy after workhours you will have to wait only a short amount. I have been here for about 5 months and the experience has been good and painless.
