The city of Hameln is storybook delightful. We are traveling in Germany for the first time, following the Fairy Tale Road. Stayed overnight here at a beautiful hotel by the river. Picked out this restaurant because of the Pied Piper theme this city is famous for and also for their specialty dinner 'Rattails Flambe'.
I felt like we were treated with disdain because we were American. We were told that the better tables by the windows were 'reserved', yet no one ever came and sat at them. The inside and outside of this restaurant is so storybook, and so quaint. I was just so excited we were going to be able to eat there and order the Rat Tails. The waitress told us we couldn't have it because we needed to 'reserve' it in advance. The menu simply states that you have to ask for the preparation time before you order. Nothing on their website mentions reserving it in advance. And how can you order from a restaurant in advance, when you just got into town and just learned about the restaurant when you got there?
Definitely NOT tourist friendly. I was so disappointed! I felt like my balloon had been crushed. The restaurant had very few customers, I don't see why they could not have made the dinner. I wanted to just get up and leave, but I had already made my elderly in-laws walk across town to get here. I couldn't expect them to walk any further.
We had passed another 'rat themed' restaurant on the way here, one that was much closer to our hotel, and one that was also very quaint looking. If I had known they wouldn't allow me to order the specialty, I would have eaten elsewhere. There was nothing else on their menu, including the Schnitzel that I ordered, that was spectacular.
I only give the restaurant this one star because the one waitress who served us, and did not speak English at all, was really very nice. The other mean Nazi waitress was the one who would not let us order the special. read more
