We came in on a weekday evening without a reservation but they had room for two for dinner outside. It was a nice summer evening. The server was very friendly and came by to check in on us at exactly the right intervals throughout the meal. The menu had traditional German food and the beer was also nice. We had such a nice time, we decided to get dessert as well. By the time we were finished with our meal, the sun had set and we strolled through the downtown to get back to the hotel.

I'm going to just start off with the fact that the Scotch selection is pretty good for German restaurants. I always enjoy my time here. I have two favorite Ratskellers in Germany and this is certainly one. The food is so well done. Very authentic Bavarian food, easy to find game meat on the menu and done very well. It helps if you can make a reservation, but I find if you walk in speaking English then switch to high German the matradee may be so impressed he just might find a place for you. Something that Americans may not know about the idea of the German Ratskeller. First Rat in German means to talk. The Rat itself means town hall and keller, of course, is cellar. The idea here (and you will find this true here are well) is that you sit next to others and join in respectful conversation. If you are from one part of the town, and your table mate is from another, you can discuss issues that you both have (probably not the same issues) and you find out more about what is best for the township instead of thinking only of yourself. This kind of discussion creates an environment of respect and allows people to come together over a good meal and understand one another. So if you find yourself sitting next to another party, be polite, say hi, and find out a little about each other. You may find we are all not so different after all.

Nice atmosphere, albeit a little chilly considering we were seeking refuge from the damp cold outside; lured by the great reviews we headed down into the belly of the Ratskeller for lunch on our first trip to Augsburg. We were seated at a cramped two-person table next to a support column in the small lower level of the underground space; we felt lucky to get a seat at all, but would have preferred the ambiance of the more elegant upper area. The host & our servers were friendly, polite and fairly swift - especially considering we showed up during lunchtime on a busy Saturday. My Flammkuchen was decent, but the toppings could have been more thoughtfully distributed for the price - several slices were simply crispy dough with a couple strings of onion. My husband's Hirsch dish was fabulous, and my side salad was nicely flavored if a little hard to eat - about 3 enormous leaves stuffed into a cute little glass bowl. We left satisfied but will definitely give another place a try next time we visit.

This is a pretty cool entry

For me, it was the journey and not the destination. The walk from the Dorint Hotel to Ratskeller is pretty casual and easy, 15 minutes. If you are staying close, do yourself a favor and walk. Take in the city and environment. The food was pretty good. I dont recall exactly the name of the entree, it was the "meat plate" or something equivalent. Three different kinds of pork along with a dumpling (kind of gummy and a strange texture for Americans but it was good) and a slaw salad. The dark beer was very good, after 700 years the brewer can safely be called a master. The atmosphere in the evening was very welcoming, the lights were not obnoxiously bright or too low and some pretty relaxed music at a decent volume (you can have a conversation with the people sitting across from you). I went back a few days later for lunch just to see if this was a one hit wonder. I was not disappointed with lunch at all. The staff was quick and friendly and the food was once again pretty good. There is a good chance I will be back in Augsburg, I will definitely be visiting once again.

I was visiting a friend in Augsburg and he brought me here for a literal taste of the local flavor. It's located in the basement of the Augsburg Rathaus (City Hall), and as the space is owned by the city, the restaurant can keep its prices low. The quality of the food, beverages, and service do not suffer for it. I'm told that it's a popular spot for wedding receptions and viewings for sports matches as well. I had an excellent dish of pork in a beer gravy, a potato dumpling, red cabbage, and a Radler to wash it down with. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a good German meal in the heart of this historic Bavarian city.

Location is great and so is the ambiance. The drinks we had were excellent. As someone who's lived and eaten in Germany for most of his life, I have to say the food was mediocre at best. Nothing was quite horrible (except for the Caesar salad, that was a bit on the disgusting side, way too much dressing and soggy) but there was definitely nothing memorable. The pretzels were very un-Bavarian and soft, not crunchy on the outside as they're supposed to be. Bottom line: I wouldn't go here for lunch or dinner but I think going here for drinks and a soccer match on the big screen might be fun.

Efficient service. Good food - had the salmon mustard sauce with fried potatoes. Cozy underground beer hall-like space with high ceilings.

Great atmosphere and good selection of traditional German food. Beer selection was solid with friendly staff that spoke English.
