I had an appt and only waited for about 5 minutes until it was my turn. Granted the room number I was given online was wrong, and the only given at the Amt was wrong too, so after going to the third room, I had finally found the correct one. As always the staff was slow, but to my surprise they were actually very friendly. I forgot to bring photos for my perso, so the lady told me where I can go and waited for me to come back. And when I did come back I was able to right back to her and get everything filed. It's not the nicest place in the world, but I have been to way worse Ämter, this is actually one of the more friendly ones I have been to

Built between 1861 and 1869, the bright red brick facade of the Red Town Hall stands out against…read morethe sea of other buildings in central Berlin. Its neo-classical style contains elements of both early Italian Renaissance and Norman architecture inspirations (according to their website). Over the last 150 years upgrades and renovations have taken place a number of times. In the 1880s to outfit the building with electricity and telephones, in the 1920-30s expansion added rooms to support the growing city government organization, from 1950-55 to repair the building from heavy damages suffered in WWII, in the 1990s to greatly modernize the building including adding elevator towers, courtyard and extended hallway lighting. This building in current times is the operational office of the Berlin Mayor and staff. It's possible to visit for guided tours and to view any current exhibits (free), though the working senate hall can only be visited when official business is not in session. The building is generally open 10am-6pm, but on certain days due they may be unexpectedly be closed so they recommend checking in advance prior to arriving. Current exhibits as of February 2025 include a 1:60 scale LEGO model of the town hall built from over 78K pieces, and a "Berlin in Plaster" exhibit that shows pieces by Berlin sculptors from between 1790 to 1850, decorative pieces from the former Berlin Palace.

Who likes public service organizations?…read more I don't. There is this depressing and sad atmosphere. People behind the counter look grumpy. Plus, their IT systems are from the 1970's and efficiency is zero (that alone would make me be grumpy all day) Surprisingly, this doesn't account for the Bezirksamt Pankow. At least not all of it. Sure, the average worker age is still 65 BUT they do have a lot of procedures outsourced to online (woah!) so you don't need to come in and wait forever just to get a signature. Their appointment system is also handy, once you get your visit scheduled you only need to come in 5mins before your appointment starts. You still won't get a smile from the workers but at least you're outta there in a reasonable time.
