Finally!!! Old School Quality and Pride found in Rand's Custom Hats of Billings, Montana! When they say "Custom" it actually screams Perfection! These "Hatters" produce some of the finest work I've ever seen. It was as if we were stepping back in time when the Rand's Crew toured us through a maze of history educating us on the art of custom hat making. From measuring, colors, brims, styles, hand sewing, steam stretching, and bands...incredible! Mine was "Rose the Hat" which I picked out everything including my frayed and torn looking hat band accompanied by a sterling hat pin. My first Rand's hat, bought 10 years ago, was -- and is -- outstanding. My second, purchased in 2020 as a gift from my wife, didn't hit that standard. Rand's agreed to re-do the hat, but never did get it right despite detailed instructions, and many photos, showing what I was going for -- they even repeated errors they had made the first time. Incredible. I finally said their latest effort looked "perfect!" just to get it back. It's clearly a nice hat, but it was up to me to get it right. The 20X felt is not like my original 20X, the color is uneven, and the marred brim I got back is beyond my ability to fix. Rand's has always been the best you could get, bar none. Maybe it still is. But -- in my case at least -- the best is not what it was. read more

The good hatter is a dying breed and you won't get this kind of quality from a store shelf hat. Of my husband's 20-some hats, his favorite is a 10-year old Rand's 20X. Many months ago, I ordered a new one as a special gift for him. When it eventually arrived, we found that 20X quality and detail are not what they used to be. The original Rand's is still clear and smooth, with a tight, sleek nap; the new one is rougher in look and finish -- nothing like the fine belly-fur feel of the older 20X. The older hat's sweatband is well placed, with my husband's name neatly stamped in gold; the new sweat is off-center with smudged letters. The first hat was shaped on a form matching my husband's head, and fits like nothing else; although Rand's still has my husband's size/shape form, I don't believe it was used. The new hat fits and feels like one of his off-the-shelf brands. Finally, the brim was only partly shaped. Maybe I'm unrealistic, but even in today's challenging conditions, I expected to see more care given a $$$$ hat. It may also be unrealistic to expect today's 20X Rand's felt to match the quality we found 10 years ago, but still, it was a letdown. The new hat is still pure beaver -- just with coarser felt, less finishing and less craftsmanship than expected. It's a nice hat. But as an example of real hatmaking skill, fit and finish ... and a special gift ... not so much. read more

I am going to be utterly honest with you. The hats here are absolutely gorgeous, but for a pretty penny. I only browsed for a few minutes, but what I saw was quite lovely and the quality was superb. What I must mention though, is how unfriendly the patrons of the store were to me. They hardly even acknowledged my presence as a potential customer. I would even so much as say I was offended by the unwelcoming stoic stares I received upon entering the store. I suppose I don't look wealthy enough? Regardless, that is absolutely no way to treat a potential customer. I would give the inventory a five star review, but the service was hardly worth a star in and of itself. read more

I do not recommend this store at all! We were told in June if we ordered the hat they'd have it done the week before our wedding. That was a complete lie!! We had drove up to pick the hat up and when we called Virginia told us that hat was never even started, and wouldn't be done until December. Then when I got upset on the phone because we were told it'd be done, Virginia had the audacity to tell me the hat would have never been done that soon, after they told us it would be done and took our money. We had made it very clear we'd go somewhere else! I asked for a refund and she said we'd have to wait until Monday! I then got upset again and she then HUNG the phone up on me!! She has horrible customer service and needs better training on how to handle upset customers. She was the one who helped us order the hat and made sure it could get done. After being treated so poorly, we then took our business to Law Dog Hat Company and he made us a custom hat that night! Gave great customer service, I highly recommend going to him over this company! read more

When you pay over $800 for a hat you expect it to fit you the first time especially when they measured your head themselves before they made it. Then when I sent it back to be resized the owner told me he would have it fixed within 48 hours. Over two weeks later I was still waiting for my hat finally got it back and it was still a little tight they said they would reimburse me for my shipping costs of $35 finally got a check in the mail but for only $25 they never did anything they said they were going to do to take care of the problem The owner also said he was going to send me a gift certificate for my troubles that never happened read more
