After my horrible experience with Tamale Street - I was still craving Tamales. I did some yelping searches and found this place - I never knew they had tamales and had lines out the door for them! I stopped by a few weeks ago and got 2 dozen and was fairly happy with them. Some of them had more masa then meat, but in all they tasted good and the prices were fair. I stopped by again this week (after Christmas) and picked up another 2 dozen. This batch had chopped up carrots in the Chicken ones. The pork ones were exploding with flavor - really good! Still in shock. Ramirez used to be the go to for our tamales. The quality throughout the years has just gone down. Gave it another try 4 days ago and found a rusted NAIL inside the tamale. I use to live around the corner from this place and only came by a handful of times. This morning the hubby was having a hankering for tamales given that the holidays are just around the corner. He suggested we visit Ramirez even though we hadn't been there in over 15 years. As we walked in we noticed the self serve salsa bar with fresh made guacamole, pico, nopalitos, avocado salsa, and green and red salsas. We decided to get a small tub of each in addition to some chips. There are two counters available for check out. One is for tamales and the other for non tamale purchases. We ordered some pork, cheese, chicken and beef tamales. All were exceptional but our favorite was the cheese. The cheese ones are spicy but are extremely flavorful. This is an update of my previous post....tamal flavor has changed...I can taste the flavor altered by the baking soda/baking powder...kind of sour. They're ok if you eat at time of purchase, but not to be reheated. They're not to die for anymore. Sorry! I really like this place but the negatives out weigh anything positive. Good tortillas, great chicken tamales and quick customer service. The problems are that always run out of tamales, high meat prices and shady scale practices. They hide scale numbers and over charge you. I have nothing but positive words for this place.. been going here for years and it's my family's favorite local spot for authentically delicious meats and tamales :) We love their carnitas, corn tortillas, pico de gallo (theirs is ADDICTING!!! I put it on everything), guac, all the tamales, and chicharrones. Love their champurrado as a special treat too. Everyone here is so so friendly and very helpful.. highly recommend it!!! Gets pretty busy with a long line around the holidays so get there before 6 am but the rest of the year it's pretty easy to just go in and out for what you need. We use to buy our tamales from here and they were delicious. We recently purchased 3 dozens of tamales (pork and cheese). I was excited to try them again this year until I noticed that the tamales were 98% masa!! There is no hardly no meat in any of the tamales me and my family have been eating. We don't want to waste money and let them go to waste so we are still eating them ( eating only the pieces of meat we find in them) we feel like we are on a treasure hunt for the tamale with meat in it!!! Still, no luck! They are really dry too so I have to cover them with my own chili. I can't believe they would make the tamales like this and sell them to the public. It's good by itself or with some carnitas that they also sell here. You know they are fresh made everyday because they're moist and not crumbly. Tamales are $1.50 each, $8.50 for 6, or $15.50 a dozen. The carnitas is $6.95 a pound. During the holidays the line is out the door to the parking lot and sometimes to the street. It's a small market with the usual staples in case you plan to make a meal in just one trip. Fresh meat, tortillas, veggies, herbs, and chiles. Pan dulce, jarritos, and Mexican candies. The tamales here were fresh, packed with filling, super moist, and very flavorful. I had to bring something for a potluck at the Kaiser Medical center and this place was just over the freeway. I phoned in the day before and ordered 1 dozen chicken, 6 pork, and 6 corn. I actually was supposed to order cheese instead of corn, but the corn was really good.
