The Race Room - Team Building At The Race Room

The Race Room

Attended as part of a corporate event with about 10 people. Blair provided a brief (20+ minute)…read moreintroductory session on car dynamics, car racing philosophy, and using the simulator. Session started out with basic hot lapping so everyone could get used to the simulator and practice race driving techniques. The simulators are ultra-realistic. You see the track via three screens in front and the car chassis and seat move in accordance with what is happening on the screen and also your input on the throttle, brake and steering wheel. There are four simulators which can run at the same time so that 4 people essentially race each other. If you think you are a great driver the simulator will humble you quickly. It is extremely challenging. It is also extremely fun and it was as close to the track experience as you will get without actually going to the track. The upside is that you will not die when you crash and your car won't need any substantive repairs after you visit the Race Room. Both Blair and his son were extremely knowledgeable about track driving, providing tips and ensuring everyone knew what was going on. After hot lapping the group moved onto 'qualifying' which is for ranking the grid before the race. The race followed. Some drivers were better than others but my impression was that everyone had a blast. Will definitely be back. (I signed up to Yelp to post this review...that's how impressed I was).

The movement of the chassis felt awesome while you are strapped in with a full 4 point harness which is needed cause it does move you around a ton. The force feed back was so realistic. The peddles had the right feel and these machines will wear you down. The tracks Ann's cars you can choose from are awesome. I spent 2 hours on the nurmburgring and I didn't want to get out of the cockpit! Challenging to anyone that wants to try out racing without the high price of renting a race car!! I would recommend this to any race enthusiast! Worth every penny in my opinion!

The Cage Batting Range

The Cage Batting Range is a solid form of physical activity and cheap fun. Whether you're looking…read morefor a unique date idea, a fun group activity or actually trying to work on your batting game I'd recommend checking out The Cage. The Cage is located just off 16th ave and Home Road in Shouldice Athletic Park. There's free parking and getting a spot is never an issue. They offer fully automated batting cages from slo-pitch to softball to baseball. There are 3 in the Slo-pitch variety, 2 softball (1 medium, 1 fast) and 2 baseball (1 medium, 1 fast). Slo-pitch and softball tend to be the more popular options and sometimes you'll have a couple people in front of you, so you'll have to wait your turn. There's kind of an unwritten code of friendliness here though where people only use 1 token (20 balls) at a time and then let someone else have a turn rather than taking consecutive turns. So that's nice :). Baseball is a little more intimidating for most, especially the fast ball. I still enjoy taking it on though and it makes for a harder challenge. The Slo-pitch machines serve pretty easy lobs as do the softballs. These can be a little less consistent at pitching imo. but this is where you probably want to start if it's your first time. I personally find that baseball serves the most consistent pitches, although the odd one can be finicky. Play around with where you're standing to find the right sweet spot. Bats and helmets are provided for your use at no additional cost, but you can also bring your own if you prefer your own equipment. Helmets are required for baseball only and you'll be given a different kind of bat depending on the game you choose (slo-pitch, softball, baseball). Prices are pretty fair, 1 token = 20 balls; 1 token = $5, 5 tokens = $20, 10 tokens = $30 or by time: 30 minutes = $40, 1 hour = $70. So if you do the math the quantity discounts are significant. I usually prefer splitting 5 tokens for pairs or getting the 10+ tokens for larger groups. I probably wouldn't recommend the timed rental unless you've been a few times or are working on your actual game. They also do reservations. The Cage is good affordable fun for a number of occasions, I'd definitely recommend checking it out at least once and deciding when you want to come back after that. It's not something you want to plan your whole day around, just a small element. I'd say 15 minutes to an hour depending how many rounds you want to get in.

This neighborhood gem is a no nonsense, no frills, honest fitness facility. I come here 2-3 times a…read moreweek to do my best Michael Phelps impression. The staff are friendly and the constant presence of lifeguards make me feel safe. The pool is clean although I've seen the occasional bandaid at the bottom. There's a constant flow of swimmers who take advantage of the lane swim times. There's a dive tank and a hot tub too. The gym is small but has what you need for a productive workout. I like building up a sweat and cooling down in the pool after. The change rooms could be cleaner but that's understandable because it's so busy. Just don't look at the floor. The lockers require quarters but some lockers are free for you to use your own lock. The rates are SO CHEAP compared to Vivo and YMCA. I bought a 30x pass that never expires for $170. That comes to just under $6/entry compared to $14 drop in at the aforementioned facilities. Drop in rates and 10x passes are also City of Calgary's website along with their pool schedules. If you're not close to Thornhill, other City of Calgary facilities are dotted around the city that offer the same rates.

I've been here in the daytime and also the evening and the attendance is quite varied. Some days it is very busy and others it's very quiet. The facility is a little bit older and not as well maintained as the other city pools. The centre does have a good sized weight room. The big disappointment is the change room facilities. They have a dark dingy feel to them. Water pools around the built in tiles benches, making you want to avoid the puddles. Now they do make the effort to clean them at the end of the night, but they could wait until the patrons have left so that they don't have to walk barefoot over cleaning solution on the floor.
