I spent 3 days exploring Voyageurs and discovered Woodenfrog Campground through the most reliable app on my phone called CAMPENDIUM. For any adventurers out there, downloading Campendium is an absolute MUST for traveling spontaneously arriving at parks and attractions on a whim. Woodenfrog Campground is situated within Kabetogama State Forest and is absolutely ideal for hikers and explorers like myself looking for simple spots to camp out while in remote Voyageurs National Park which straddles the Canadian border. Woodenfrog was perfect! There are 3 separate sections for discovering what makes Voyageurs unique and having Woodenfrog Campground was ultra convenient for getting around each day. It actually sits in the middle of Voyageurs about 7 miles away from the main road getting into and out of the park. Kabetogama is the official town here and it's quite primitive and secluded. And since there weren't too many motels/lodges/cabins to stay for evenings in the area...Woodenfrog Campground was more than suffice! When I arrived during the week back in the summertime of this year, June 2021, there were tons of empty camping spaces available. Reading off their website, it said there were 59 drive-in campsites for anyone and everyone to come and enjoy. It was $17 per night for a campsite. I drove around and backed my car into one of the sites and then returned to the entrance area to complete a camping/information slip and paying $34 for 2 evenings. I knew right away I'd be content staying here. The campsites were huge and offered plenty of space and privacy. Each site had a firepit as well as a picnic table. Again, I can't stress enough how spacious the sites were! Also, I guess Voyageurs isn't too crowded in terms of receiving visitors...but if you're an obsessive national parks fan, then at some point you must visit Voyageurs and I can't stress enough how much I appreciated staying at this Woodenfrog Campground. During my visit I couldn't believe how this place could be so deserted? I loved everything about being here! - There was terrific cell phone reception. - I had no issues setting up my tent on some grassy sections of my campsite. - After sunsets it felt like I was spending beautiful nights under the stars deep within the heart of the woods, yet I was just a short drive from town. A few other details... - According to their website, they have 7 vault toilets (no big deal, imo), access to the lake, 2 boating docks and a picnic shelter. - All sites are reserved on a first-come, first served basis. For myself kind of winging things on the spot not knowing how much time I needed during my visit to Voyageurs, I admired having the first-come, first served aspect. It allowed me to be flexible with my planning. - Btw, leaving my tent still set up during daytimes while I went out exploring was perfectly fine. When I returned in late afternoons, my tent was still sitting there at my campsite, lol. I just want to mention how accessible Woodenfrog Campground was. Like I mentioned it sits in the middle of Voyageurs in Kabetogama and the following day I hung out in the main section of the park by Rainy Lake about 40 miles to the west. Finally my last day I drove over to the Ash River section 21 miles east. During my research of Voyageurs I noticed that if you choose to stay at a motel or lodge around the park, it cost at least a minimum of $100+ per night. But since I was road-tripping it, I didn't want to have set-in-stone plans. I preferred to travel on my own terms. That's why Woodenfrog was amazing plus having my tent with me and camping for $17 per night was quite affordable. When I reflect upon staying at Woodenfrog Campground within Kabetogama State Forest, it certainly conjures up good memories. In terms of national park camping accommodations, it's easily 5 stars for those nature lovers trying to immerse themselves in the great outdoors and making the most of their Voyageurs NP experiences.

We started the morning out fishing rainey lake to catch our lunch, which was so enjoyable and successful. Once that was checked, jeff dropped us off to hike the anderson bay loop, which is a 3-mile beautiful trail you don't want to miss with great views along the way. we then headed to set up our shore lunch soon to find that Jeff is a great cook. highly recommend this added treat. And of course he ended our day with a visit to Kettle Falls to load our water bottles with pink slushies for the way home. Have to say the day was the highlight of our trip up North. The stargazing tour was magical as the fading light gave way to a sky full of stars and even the milky way. Spectacular. The morning tour was equally impressive. We were so fortunate to see a bald eagle fishing. If you are not someone who has a boat (or even if you do?) this is the way to see the park. Headache/hassle free. Bruce picks you up from the dock at thunderbird lodge and off you go. No maps, no crowds, no lines. Just Bruce and his lifetime of memories and knowledge of the area. He created two days of tours tailored to our families desires. Was patient and kind with our kids (12 & 14). Andersen Bay, Oveson Fish Camp, Lunch at Kettle falls and miles of Rainy Lake and its beauty. All with fun stories mixed with historical facts. The boat was comfortable and nobody was seasick. A smooth ride. Highly recommend this tour. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

There's a diorama and movie, nice indoor bathrooms, rangers there to answer questions. I wish it was better understood how to rent kayaks for people who don't have a boot or want to pay $$$ boat money when it's just themselves. That's my regret! It would be nice to have had watercraft options at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center.

The visitor center has an area full of informational displays, a small gift shop, and washrooms. Outside in the back is a small ethnobotanical garden with a wide variety of plants significant to the indigenous Ojibwe people. I learned a good deal about the native plants that have been cultivated for food, ceremonies and housing materials for centuries. However, if you do decide to stroll around, make sure you have a generous amount of mosquito repellent. I must have missed a spot on my back as I got at least three mosquito bites there. Yikes! Once you're on the boat tour in the middle of the lake, the bugs melt away as the boat zooms around. I saw a lot of beautiful scenery, but not a lot of animals. It was still good though, as Joe, one the the NPS rangers, was absolutely hilarious!

This is a water-based national park, so to fully experience this you need to be out on the water. I…read moretook two boat tours through the NPS, but many people fish or rent houseboats to experience the park. There are camp sites, but the vast majority are on islands which require watercraft to access. Kettle Falls Cruise - This takes you from Ash River Visitor Center to Kettle Falls and back. You can bring your own food for lunch on the boat (no eating or drinking other than water on the boat though) or order at the Visitor Center so you get a lunch box waiting for you at the Lodge. I opted to get a lunch box, which consisted of a dill pickle spear, a bag of potato chips, and a simple lunch meat sandwich. I normally don't like lunch meat sandwiches (especially since this was was reminiscent of primary school lunches), but eating at the historic lodge and the beautiful surroundings made this the best, most delicious sandwich in its class! If you have mobility issues, they have a golf cart you can ride to the hotel, otherwise it's a maybe 10 minute walk from the dock to hotel. Check out the dam and walk around, and then you're back on the boat for the cruise to the visitor center. Grand Tour Cruise - This departs from the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and does not have any stops. It's more for general enjoyment and wildlife viewing. I saw a lot of beautiful scenery, but not a lot of animals. It was still good though, as Joe, one the the NPS rangers, was absolutely hilarious! Both tours provided binoculars free to borrow for your enjoyment. Be sure to apply a lot of mosquito spray, as the mosquitos here are ferocious. Also consider some rain gear as it can get rainy.

Voyageurs is an under visited park with lots to offer. It excels at paddle packing. You must have a…read moreboat to really explore the park because no camping is available except on islands in the park's lakes. The park doesn't rent boats so plan to bring your own or rent from a local outfitter. If you do need somewhere cheap or free to sleep nearby, check the overnight parking area at Wooden Frog which also comes with water and vault toilet facilities. There are three different visitors centers each offering something different.
