Finally found the giant perennial hibiscus that I have been searching for near my home (Franklin NC). Very easy to work with.

Lots to choose from with knowledgeable owner. Be careful with Apple Maps as it goes to their growing site and not the actual nursery.

The "doorman" (I assume he is the owner) was a big turn-off & he is not dog friendly! At first…read moreglance, the store appears to be dog friendly with a big bowl of water placed outside their front door in between 2 fern-type plants on the sidewalk. These plants are not raised off the ground or in planters but instead at the level for a dog sniffing around for other dog smells. So my husband & I were strolling the avenue discovering the beautiful downtown of Waynesville when we came upon the ironically named "Pleasant Places" shop. The doorman was standing there, I gave him a friendly Hello while our dog sniffed around the sidewalk, happened upon their big water bowl, and to the doorman's misfortune & to our surprise, lifted his leg to the aptly placed 1 of 2 ferns welcoming dogs & humans to their establishment. Long story short, I cringed & was embarrassed that my dog did this, however, I don't blame him for putting his marking atop those that came before him...that's what dogs do! The doorman made a comment under his breath as he appeared astounded by our dog's actions. My husband immediately apologized & poured some water from the water bowl onto the leaves of the plant. The doorman made another comment which I was taken aback by. We proceeded onward down the main street & then I took a few steps backward and said to the doorman..."You have 2 big ferns on the sidewalk in front of your entrance with a dog bowl between them...what do you expect a dog to do?!" We went on our way to discover the sweetest hippest older woman in another shop. I told her what had just happened. She welcomed our dog and gave him a treat. To the doorman...I would just advise that if you want to protect your plants from dogs relieving themselves on them, then please place them in pots above a dog's easy reach.
