Let's kick-off by saying it's more of a restaurant than a pub. Food is the main thing. It's owned by a chain (Whitbread? Who cares?), so the food is frozen-fried-formulaic. It's not a fine dining experience.
Having got that out of the way though, as a dining experience.... It's fine. The staff are polite and efficient. The kitchen runs smoothly. The prices are cheap - fish and chips for two, with two beers, for £15 anyone?
I can't be snobbish about such a place as long as I know that so many 'real' restaurants serve pre-made food at much higher prices and with more pretense.
Having known 'The Railway' since I was a child, I can tell you it wasn't much of a loss to the world of pubs and it amply fulfills it's new role. Once interesting fact; there is a Norse longboat buried under the car park, apparently - yet to be excavated, but found to be there by echographs. Perhaps they should add pickled herrings to the menu! read more
