There are not many pubs that put me in the mind of the sociologist William H Whyte, but to…read moreparaphrase him the Plough and Harrow 'is a big place that is intimate in the workings of its small pieces'. Being both large and small at the same time, this suburban pub has something for everyone. The interior is perfect for everything you want in a pub - a large family meal, a quiet drink for two in a hidden corner or for celebrating an England goal on the big screen with fifty fellow fans. The garden works in the same way - sit under a tree and read a book, enjoy the Sunday papers on a picnic bench, or watch the kids play on the swings or on the bouncy castle, which makes an appearance with the summer. The food here is typical pub grub, it doesn't cost a fortune and it goes down comfortably. Look out for the grill night or the curry night! Perhaps I also tend to intellectualise the Plough and Harrow because Thursday night is quiz night! My favourite night of the week! Just so you know this is no ordinary quiz. The standard is high and the regular teams take things very, VERY seriously. People play for glory rather than prizes and some weeks there can be over 20 teams taking part. Again, my team take advantage of the pub's layout and hide in a corner to make sure no-one can copy our answers! I'm very strict and cannot stand cheaters!

There are only five words needed to take me back to The Blake Barn - 'TWO FOR ONE' and 'GIANT…read moreDESSERTS'. The 'two for one' offer is great and is ideal for a group of friends getting together or families going out to dinner. The menu has a lot to offer but don't forget to take a peek at the specials board. If you fancy a lighter bite then I'd recommend you go for one of the sandwiches. My favourite is the battered cod coujons baguette. You get two massive fish fingers smothered in tartar sauce (personally I prefer ketchup), some tortilla chips and a side sprinkling of salad for only £4.95, it definitely hits the spot. The menu here is unlike any other as they offer giant desserts and hen I say giant I mean GIANT! The picture on the menu didn't do the Gateau Florence cake I had justice. Everytime I finished a layer of sponge a level of something fruity was waiting for me. I feel stuffed now just thinking about it! My advice would be to share one. Inside there is plenty of seating but if the weather is good grab a spot outside, it is a great sun trap and though you are near to the train station it's surprisingly quiet. This is a great place to eat or even just to catch a drink but be warned that the service can be slow at peak times and unless you sit outside you have to have table service (not really to my liking). I suggest you get your food orders in quick and whilst waiting decide which GIANT dessert you are going to have!

If you haven't been to this pub before I would recommend doing this as soon as possible! Located in…read morethe Blake Street Railway, next to the Blake Street station, this pub has a differential: its service! I'm pretty much used to the "go-to-the-bar-and-ask-for-your-beer" kind of serving but as there is nothing wrong about being spoiled a little bit, I quite enjoyed the way they serve the clientele. A very receptive and attentive to details staff, to be more specific. The fact this pub has a "two for one" menu is also another reason to stop by. It's pretty much a kind of deal that when you chose two main courses from a special section of the menu, the lower priced meal chosen is for free. I can guarantee their four cheese and roasted Mediterranean vegetable pie made my day and even If I have already tried better Tangy lemon curds before, I will certainly repeat a meal experience at Blake Barn soon! They have parking but the best way to visit this pub is by train. No driving, the drinks are allowed!

This is literally a pub of two halves…read more The entrance is located by a small outdoor seating area. As you open the front door you need to ask yourself if you're here to eat or here to drink. If it's pub grub you're after then take a left and settle down in a comfy armchair, or sit upright at one of the laid tables. In the week it's a popular place with pensioners looking for a reasonably priced pub lunch. But, on Sundays it is advisable to book a table as things get even busier when the carvery is laid on. Not hungry? Then turn right and head into the bar section of the pub. This part of the White Lion is a pub's pub, pure and simple, very popular with locals some of whom seem to spend all weekend in here propping up the bar - it's friendly enough though. The pub does sport pretty well, with the Aston Villa stronghold unfurling the big screen for the big games. Otherwise, there are a couple of other smaller screens located around the bar section. Come into the pub on a Sunday, and the carvery leftovers are likely to be laid out on the bar for the drinkers to help themselves to. Lager actually goes down quite nicely with a roast potato and Yorkshire pudding. Sunday roast tapas anyone?

I always imagine a kind of blandness, even though I'm sure it's a boon at delivery time. While there is a vaguely pre-fab feel here, the entrance corridor splits the venue in two and that's where things get interesting as the bar and lounge become clearly marked. The lounge, renovated within the last few years (it was in need), tends to draw on couples visiting from surrounding homes; among them a significant proportion who are there for meals. It's not the chicest set-up you'll have seen, but it somehow combines a certain genteel charm with thriving trade. An outdoor terrace lurks behind. Perhaps where the venue comes into its own is through its bar, which bustles with an after-work crowd and regulars. It's a good bet for those who just can't be bothered to make the effort to get to The Crown nearby, which keeps things just a bit more formal. There's plenty of outdoor seating to the front of the venue. Those making a special trip may be a smidge disappointed, but parking will not be a problem, although Butlers Lane railway station is very close - a stop on the busy cross-city line connecting Lichfield to Birmingham. It's probably best then to combine a trip with a crawl taking in The Crown and the impressive Butlers Arms (reviewed on Yelp).
