Las Raices is the restaurant I've been seeking for years. I have lived and worked in CDMX and I have never seen such a great, authentic, indigenous-focused, wide ranging, delicious array of delightful dishes. Every other Mexican restaurant needs to apologize to this place for calling their stuff Mexican food. Where has it been hiding all this time? It's been hiding in the back of a storefront on Avenida Belgica. The restaurant doubles as an art and dance workshop so be ready for an entertaining evening. The owners have a healthy knowledge of indigenous life, language, dishes, ingredients, and tastes, and their food is nothing less than fantastic.
We tried almost everything on the menu and it was all superb. The drinks - Tascalate, Teja, Chilate, even the Chocolate - were an experience above and beyond the normal CDMX faire. Dang, I'd push my mama out of the way like a punk on the metro for a Tascalate.
Go ahead, get a little of everything on the menu. It's like a tapas place without the price.
I'm not kidding. I'd pay for the flight to CDMX just to come back with my smokin' hot foodie wife.
