Ever since going to this gym 5 years ago I have had a laundry list of health problems. I have two herniated discs which started while training here and eventually got worse, one in my back and one in my neck. I also had at least 2 minor concussions here. The one that stands out most was when sparring an overeager new student. I literally fell over and people here hardly cared or noticed. Some of them were fine just hitting me hard in the head after it happened or just throwing me to the ground repeatedly as I did half speed kicks, even the person who knocked me down decided to swing for the fences again that same day. I have a pretty high pain tolerance and I probably didn't fully even know how hurt I was but I still think it was a little overkill and just weird to go after someone who is already obviously hurt. It's sparring not a fight. I made sure to write all this down after it happened because it was definitely not normal for this to happen at places like these. It was basically a beginner level class with some more advanced students if I remember correctly. Not a place where getting knocked out is common. I know how this sounds, it's a contact sport and stuff happens and I would have been fine with that and probably accepted it and moved on. However, the main problem is when I tried to speak to the owner several times, and one of the instructors once I did not have a good experience. I won't go into too much detail but I was accused of lying about my injuries, I was gaslit, asked if I was autistic multiple times, or they just made jokes or didn't take me seriously. The owner also thought I was a bully for hitting people hard in sparring when I was also frequently getting hit hard. The spars/rolls/clinching was often so over the top that my back literally gave out and I started to develop issues I've never had before. This place deserves a 1 star review not so much for the injuries but for being so scummy about it. If someone gets a bad injury at least be respectful about it. Would have been appreciated. The owner and anyone working for him really should take a hard look at themselves if this sort of behavior is still going on here. If someone has a complaint or concern, taking it seriously would be a good place to start. Radius has been a safe haven for me (not grey or dark at all). I'm grateful for all of the people I have met and trained with. Everyone has been enormously supportive of my growth and one another as far as I can tell. I think it can be challenging for a woman to enter a sport that is predominantly male. However, I have always felt welcome and valued-something I cannot say I have experienced at many other gyms. I see the gym as a community--something that is intentionally built by leadership at Radius. read more

I spent years at Radius Martial Arts training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with some of the best teammates I could ask for, including Travis, who is now the owner. It's not hard to find a martial arts school that has an owner with a black belt or even a decorated competitive past, but it IS hard to find an owner that cares about his students as much as Travis does. Radius is a welcoming environment. It's not the size of a warehouse like a UFC gym might be, and it doesn't try to be all things for all people. It's a martial arts school that prides itself on honor, discipline, respect, and of course, hard work. Old or young, tall or short, man or woman, it doesn't matter. Radius has programs that fit your needs and your schedule. That's the great thing about martial arts (and BJJ specifically, which I'm partial to)--it doesn't lend itself to one type of person or body style. It's for everyone. If you're looking for a martial arts school in the Fairfield County area that will welcome you with open arms and focuses on disciplines that are effective and useful (and not just a money grab), then Radius is the place. read more

Attended a seminar last night with my daughter & husband for the gyms 10th planet grand opening merge. They had Travis Newaza as their special quest & he was a lot of fun. The place is spacious and clean with a lot of great natural lighting and open air. The owners were friendly and welcoming & we all enjoyed our time there. Would definitely visit again. read more

I have dropped in twice in the past month for no gi and the place had been extremely welcoming. Great group that trains here. So happy to have found a great Brazilian jui jitsu studio in Fairfield. Travis and team are great. Anytime I am in town I will be back. read more

When I tried to pause my membership at Radius, the owner took personal hits at me, calling me "uncoachable" and continued to act unproffesional towards me via text message until I blocked his number and had to call my bank so they would freeze my credit card. The customer is not right here, the customer is always in the wrong unless they agree with the owner...this is three days before the holidays by the way...so much for Holiday Spirit of kindness and goodwill towards others read more

First started coming here my senior of high school (I'm 23); great place if you want to train and get in shape while also a very welcoming enviornment; I came here originally just to get in better shape but started playing rugby as well and the physicality was a great way to prepare me for the seasons through college. But especially since Travis and Lisa have taken over a few years ago I've noticed tons of people training and competing. They are both super nice and always been very patient with me and everyone else. Same goes for Steve, Josh, Kurt, and Tom; every instructor here is super knowledgeable and will be patient with anyone whether it's jiu-jitsu or Muay Thai. read more

I was looking for a place to drop into while visiting Fairfield and I have been so thrilled that I found Radius, it is a place I will definitely incorporate into my plans whenever I am in town from now on. Radius is a trifecta; the instructors are very knowledgeable, the students are respectful of each other and the facility is clearly well cared for. This is the rare kind of place where you can have an equally positive experience as a total beginner or as a more seasoned practitioner interested in going to the next level. Definitely read the owner's response to the negative review by 'Bart F' before putting any stock in it whatsoever. I can vouch that Bartek ('Bart F') was a 'difficult' gym member. I am a female with whom he refused to go a one-minute WARM UP round of body boxing... He knows people warm up by kicking and punching **the air** (aka shadow boxing) right?? And he can't go a minute with a woman? Makes you think, right?? In any case, indeed Radius may not be a good fit for you if you just want to take your 'roid rage out on unsuspecting partners and not be a team player by any stretch of the imagination. Radius is a gem. The environment is welcoming; I should know, I'm a 38 year old mother of 3 who hadn't exercised in a decade when I walked in to do Muay Thai for the first time in as many years. I had every reason to be judged, but instead I was mentored by 3 very patient and knowledgeable trainers--including Travis, the owner himself-- as they all worked with me individually to get the ball rolling. There are also plenty of people there who are quite the opposite of me- incredibly fit long-time practicers of Muay Thai. All find a home here. In summary, if you want to rip people apart limb from limb and just can't find anywhere else to do it, probably best to keep looking. But if you want a welcoming place to train hard and learn from some of the best, this is the place for you. read more

Ok so I am somewhat of a nerdy type that has wanted to learn every martial art that I possibly can! Although my background is all stand up fighting and I have actively avoided any kind of grappling, I decided to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Radius Martial Arts. I cannot tell you how comfortable I feel training with Sensei Travis (owner and black belt) and Sensei Steve in BJJ both gi and no-gi respectively. Everyone is very patient and accommodating and I do not just mean the instructors. Some of the other more advanced students are very eager to help you and I gotta say that really helps to learn an art that I do not consider easy. In addition, I have decided to advance my learning of Muay Thai and Coach Josh is a great instructor that will help you with all things Muay Thai! I also happen to train in Wing Chun Kung Fu which is also offered here and Sifu De San Ti is a great instructor. For those of you who have always wanted to "try out" martial arts, I can only say that this place is amazing, very very affordable and you really should try it out! read more
