Mainly hosted by volunteer retierees and the occassional Jazz or Classical music nut, 5MBS plays, you guessed it, solely Jazz and Classical Music. Not only does 5MBS have minimal (practically zero) advertisments they have minimal (practically zero) talking. It is part of their slogan, no news no talk back, yada yada yada, all fine music. The balance, unfortunately, is slightly in favour of the classical, which, although I enjoy, I don't enjoy as much as I enjoy Jazz. I think that it may, however, be somewhat remeniscent of the scenario of "sweets and vegetables", because classical music is good for you, and jazz is just good. In which instance the balance is probably just right. A good station to listen to if you are trying to concentrate and just want a few peaceful tunes in the background. 5MBS can also be quite informative if one is looking to broaden their musical outlook. 5MBS also offers a handy "Arts Diary" which broadcasts every couple of hours (in the breif periods in which talking is permitted) which outlines coming events in the arts such as concerts, exhibitions, performances etc. Which can be helpful to keep one in the loop.

I must admit up front, I used to be an ABC employee for many years so I do have an inside insight into the workings of our national broadcaster. The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra also used to live at Collinswood but a few years back they moved into stand alone faciliities in Hindley Street in the city. For a time with television, radio and ASO all housed in the one building, the Adelaide ABC was unique in having all three major areas together in the one building. Television wise, the Collinswood studio is home to Poh's Kitchen, Behind The News, the local ABC TV News and 7.30 Report as well as certain amount of content made specifically for the Asia Pacific network. There are staff located at Collinswood specifically for the purpose of making these programs. In terms of radio, 891 ABC Adelaide local radio has its studios at Collinswood. Radio National, ABC Classic FM, Grandstand also have staff and program makers in Adelaide. There is a great canteen inside the building for staff use called Tregenna. It takes its name from the building that used to be on the site before the 8 story monolithic tower was built. While the ABC building isn't open to the general public, there are tours of the Collinswood complex held by and for specific tours groups like schools and Rotary Groups. Annual ABC Open Days and events like Carpark Capers also give interested members of the public the chance to have a look around the facilities. They started out in small offices in Hutt Street in the city square but for the last few years they have relocated to the Western outskirts of the city, to Hindmarsh. In its new home out of the city Radio 5MBS - the Music Broadcasting Society - has gone from strength to strength. They are always broadcasting 'fine music' mainly classical and jazz, and they are also always on the search for new members and subscribers because that's what keeps any community radio station going. The MBS network or concept is nation wide and you will find a station in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra broadcasting very similar music with local volunteers there. Maybe one reaches a certain age and starts to feel the need for only jazz and classical music? It hasn't happened to me yet, but I must admit it is a nice station to listen to, and now out of the city for a few years in their new Hindmarsh home, they are more relaxed all around. If you'd like to support their endeavours go to the website and become a subscriber member.

You can pick up a copy pretty much everywhere in Adelaide, and it's a super handy little snapshot of what's going on. Food, drink, a little smattering of fashion, music, arts. As it's produced on a weekly basis content is more aimed more at big picture coverage rather than more super readable articles etc - though it does have good interviews every now and then. Personally I don't really grab it for a read - some street press publications take advantage of its status outside of the normal publishing rules to produce some really opinionated and experimental content - RiU isn't one of those publications. That said, it doesn't need to be. It's firmly entrenched as your #1 go-to for what's on in Adelaide.

Catering to the counterculture, young aspiring musicians and radio presenters, activists, political sorts and generall allround wierdos, 3D is up there with my favorite radio stations. The music is diverse, from the heaviest of metal to the chilledest of trance. Hiphop, reggae, indie rock, acoustic, folk and whatever else is going, if it is new, local and entirely unproffessional then you will prbably hear it on 3D radio. Entirely special to 3D is the Monday night event known as the Hillbilly Hoot, which is conducted in an old shed (however I always imagine a chicken coop) out the back of the station. It is effectively hillbilly open mike, although run by a few regulars, and broadcast live on radio, and is generally hilarious. The range is broad, from quite talented to really not talented at all, but the vibe is fantastic and each session is brought to a close by an all in rendition of that hillbilly gospel classic "Will the circle be unbroken." A must to check out if you are slightly interested in that sort of music, slightly interested in strange phenomena, or play an instrument, sing (not neccessarily well) and merely just want to want to have a go yourself. By and by Lord by and by.

Luckily, I have drive, a writing addiction, and important information given to me by customer attendants for previous reviews, to remember. Great store for a writer like me. I've been here before several times pretty much just for essential items like the odd multitrip bus ticket, stationery or magazines. The Rundle Mall Plaza Newsagency does feel a little bit empty each time and somewhere you don't want to hang around for too long. Upon walking in, you are emerged in a very quiet culture, complete with several rows of mindless magazines and greeting cards for less than half an hour of fun. I managed to walk around the crowd a bit, to get to the area known as "the great wall of pens", that holds plenty of different coloured pens, pencils, and other stationery. A perfect place to take a visiting guest or regular who has the "writing itch" to scratch off...it'll bring out the inner writer within.

Now, as a bloke, I've noticed that some news agencies have very little in the way of reading material for the fellas. They almost all, pretty much without exception, have stacks of women's magazines. That never really changes. A lot of places limit their mens range to *those* magazines that are wrapped in plastic (apparently to seal in the badness), and maybe a couple of magazines for the dude who likes V8s and other pushrod-powered dinosaurs. Not that's there's anything wrong with them. I've got some varied tastes as a car nut, but the same old Aussie muscle car mags just don't do it for me. So when I walked in here, I wasn't expecting much. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did they have some of the harder to get stuff (like some of the US based VW mags), they had plenty of copies of each. I walked out with my copy of ACVWs, Zoom and HPI, as well as a PC magazine. This place has some real variety. I'll be going back again next time I'm in Adelaide.
